"Hauls ass"

3rd gear seems to be the magic gear for my S4s and the V-8's I've driven. Although 2nd is pretty strong also.

Hey mine's not listed! third gear is my favourite. At cruising speeds if someone is to close to me or I just want to have some fun, I pop it into third and plant it, its bye bye to everyone

The SE 3rd gear is pretty good. But for running away from sport bikes at over 60 4th is great as one does not have to shift for a long time and every time the bike shifts they drop further behind.

3rd is by far the best in all 4 Esprits I've owned. It will happy pull from 30 to over 100.

On the V8 - from 0, 1st gets you going but 2nd is the great accelerator. 3rd, however, by far has the most range. It seems to pull good from 2k to 3k all the way up through 6500 or so (rpm's)

Yep, I'd agree with that on that on the V8. 2nd gear pins you to the seat and 3rd just keeps going and going and going !!

Stop on down. We'll go for a ride in the Lotus. I personally like 2nd and 3rd. They both pull very nice at 18psi on the 330HP chip. After that we'll go for a ride in the Talon. I'll be sure to have race gas on hand so I can watch you poop a brick when you feel what a 5500rpm AWD launch and 27psi of turbocharged fun can be!

Consider it done!! I would love to go for a ride in both vehicles. The fastest car i've ever been in was my buddies 5.0 Stang worked to the brim! Supercharger, aluminum heads, everything else!! Man when the boost kicked in, I was pinned to the seat so hard I couldnt lean forward if I wanted to.

I would love to feel an Esprit and a talon with 27psi of boost! Thats got to be one hell of a ride.

When did you have in mind? Next weekend?

This weekend is no good for me, perhaps next? Let me know.

Whenever. Pretty much any weekend other than July 4th and the following is good for me. Unfortunately the Talon started running pretty crappy this weekend. When we go for a ride, it won't be as fast as she should be. She needs some love so hopefully I'll get to her soon. I gotta get them both to the track one of these days too.

Are you sure

Yeah when a bike comes even up at 60 you can see him shifting to take off. Drop the hammer as he shifts, at 60 in 4th the Esprit SE is at a really nice spot for the turbo. No need to shift till past the 120-130 range, he should be back aways by that time. He will be shifting like crazy and it will really bother him that every time he shifts at those speeds he will drop back further. At this point if the biker is wearing street clothes like any type of open jacket or shirt he is going to get beat up by the wind something fierce and will usually back off. Then if possible lead him off the hwy using a clover leaf exit at high speeds and onto a road with some turns. One will get some respect from bikers using this tactic. Oh as a further act once well ahead and as one is still in accelration mode just let on gas pedal and rest your foot on the brakes. Not enough to slow the car just to light up brake light and while the lights are lit stomp back on the gas. When done correctly it can screw with a person mind, like he is thinking this guy is slowing down for me!

After you are done give him a nice thumbs up as a bike is very formidable opponent for just about any car. There are certain bikes out there that one should race and beware of riders in full suits at check out the bikes they are on before taking them on. You might only be able to take them on in twisties.

Bikes do accelerate very fast from a stop and unless you get a big drop on them there is very little you can do to beat them from a stop. Bikes have high reving engines but not too much torque. Their gearing is their strength and weakness. Just make sure your Esprit is a tad over 3K so the turbo response is tight. There is always a time and place to exploit the strengths of the Esprit and weakness of others.

Take care when you race, don't put bystanders at risk, and if you do race for god sakes don't make the rest of look bad by losing.

Mr Gazboy:

Presumeably these are in the 400-600cc range, most superbikes will slaughter most cars.

I've only raced* two bikes (both on private land or foreghn shores officer), my brothers GSXR400R, and a collegues SV650 (an underpowered twin), the 4' was from a standing start, over a mile, he absolutely killed me, until we got to 110mph when I caught him, then stayed level to 135, when we ran out of 'track'.

The 650 was from a rolling start at 40, we were dead level to 90ish, then I pulled away, until the bike hit the limiter in 6th at 130, but I wasn't going much faster anyway.

Actually most of it was against bikes in the 750-1000 range. In my area most do not buy the smaller bikes, everyone is into speed. On the hwy we can get up to speeds and not run out of track. Sometimes we go at it for miles and not see anyone else.

The bikes pull very strong from a stop but not so well if it is rolling. I would never take on a bike from a stop. You are right in that the bikes will out accelerate most cars from a stop. Try it from 60-130 with the bike even up with car when both of you are doing about 60. It seems the bikes just don't have as strong as pull in this range as one might expect.

My Esprit SE is right at home in this range. We have the added speed factor also and the car feels at home to 150. While the rate of acceleration slows a bit in the 130-145 range it is still climbing pretty good after that the climb to 160 and beyond is a bit slower and seems to take forever.

I have my windows rolled up and am pretty comfortable. The bike riders in my mirrors looks like they are getting beat up pretty bad by the wind. I don't know if I would ride a bike at those speeds with street clothes. Heck I don't know if I would ride a bike at those speeds even with proper attire. Almost seems like a ride for survival. They sure seem to slow down for turns though like when exiting off on cloverleaf exchanges.

I wonder what the road feel is like for a bike on different surfaces like concrete hwy as opposed to smoother backtop?

its actually quite stable. I have moronically had my bike up to 158mph and it feels perfectly stable and planted on any surface. Even over bumps at 100mph it doesnt upset the bike at all.

The wind passed 90 is horrendous though, if you were going like 130 and lifted your head from under the wind screen, you feel as if your head will be ripped off.

158 is fine as long as you are comfortable doing it and it feels okay. Since you are a bike rider what is the pull like at 60? Sure looks slugish even when the bike is a GSXR1000. The Esprit bangs at 60 when the boost comes on. In 4th the boost is on just a tad till you stomp on it and the boost will just rock.

The bike people I race all down shift before taking off but the pull is not quite strong enough for them. I look in my mirror and if the guy is wearing a jacket and it is flapping around it sure seems like it hurts and it seems like it is just beating them up at over 100. At those speeds I roll up my windows. I usually see them shift 2-3 times and everytime they shift they lose ground. It all over in a 2-3 miles anyways.
