fire supression systems
Discussion
who has installed them and have they used them on a fire?
I have just signed up for a driving school and am considering to insall a simple system.

I wonder where it the best area to aim the nozzles..
I figure the souce of fuel is best, ie cannister and fuel lines,, maybe one on the turbo to cool down any souce if ignition..
thoughts?

Bruce,
I considered installing a built-in supression system in my Esprit. But considering the already tight quarters and the fact that there are fuel tanks and vapor hoses on both sides, I elected instead to go with a 3lb. Halon portable extinguisher which I have attached to the passenger side seat adjuster bar w/ 4 SS cable ties through the included bracket (rated at 1,000lbs. @, leaving little chance it would break lose in a collision and shatter the passenger's ankles). Easily accessible, but out of the way and doesn't interfere with either seat operation or passenger ingress/egress.
Any fire that can't be controlled with 3lb. of Halon, I don't want to be fooling around with anyway. That's when I look up my Agent's number! Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE

I may be wrong but I thought halon was banned a few year back, maybe it was just Europe. I grabbed the last few units from an old workplace before I left, although they may have lost pressure now.
Hi,
Halon is still readily available. The CFC Recovery Act has designated it for Marine and Aircraft use. Any Marine Supplier will have and sell it. I got mine at: Westpac Marine (www.westpacmarine.com/westpac/contact_westpac.htm).
It is listed as a HazMat and it was kinda funny when the UPS guy arrived carrying it, all festooned with Hazardous Warning labels, like it was a time bomb, shoulda seen the look on his face when I told him it was only a fire extinguisher...
Halon was superceded by HalonII which the EPA deemed was not harmful to the Ozone layer. Later, it was found that once released, HalonII reacts with other airborne chemicals and is actually more Ozone depletive than Halon.
For the TreeHuggers amongst us, be aware that there is no environmental effect if the extinguisher is not discharged, and probably much less effect than allowing all those resins and such to burn should you ever need to use it. I wonder if I should put a HazMat label on the Esprit? Happy Motoring! ...Jim'85TE
Hi.. Check this stuff out.. Ive seen it in action.. its VERY effective. Its apparently harmless and safe to use on our precious cars. Jan

I literally just installed a SPA AFFF system in my Esprit V8 last week. I am attending some track days and several clubs are now insisting on fire extinguishers.
After looking at mounting one in the passenger footwell, thus interferring with the crotch strap of my five-point harnesses I opted for a remote mounted system.
I mounted the tank on the drivers side (opposite the battery side) on the rear wall of the rear trunk. I mounted it low enough so the screws for the mounting bracket went into the area between the rear bumper and the rear trunk. I removed the rear decking behind the engine and mounted the tubing along the rear decking on the botton side(outside), running it up so one nozzle sprays directly on the fuel delivery system, then a "T" to the left and right side of the engine to douse the turbos, intakes, etc. The SPA bottle simply plugs into the tubing through a small hole in this rear decking. I used a small rubber grommet to prevent water from entering the trunk area.
I used a manual pull system, running the cable through the fire wall just to the outside of the driver's seat but inside the rear hatch release mechanism. It's tight, but it can be mounted. In retrospect, I may have been better off using an electical system using the blank switch on my dash (US V8) to install the extingusiher activation switch.
All in all a fairly tidy set up and now the Porsche guys will let me run with them at Road America in July! If you e-mail me off list at Feffman@Yahoo.com, I'll send you some photos.

I know this may be too late your you. However, I have visited the canadian distributor for coldfire. I have talked to him about the Nascar approved fire supression system you were likely quoted on. He will to see if we can get a two-nozzle/ manual activation system package priced more in line with what you have ordered. Alternatively, they have "glove box" sized and 2lb extinguishers for convenient mounting. He is sending me a product and price list.
Regarding the built-in system... Maybe we could do a group order and get a top rated system for a good price. Whats the concensus? Jan
