Hello all,
After reading some interesting posts on the subject of tranaxle lube and the great performance of redline, I decided to purchase some MT-90 in the hopes that it may help a slightly tired 2nd gear syncro and smooth out the downshift from third to second. My car is a 1984 Turbo Esprit. The owners manual specificaly states that API GL-5 lubricant should be used. After reading the MT-90 label, it states that this lubricant "SHOULD NOT BE USED on a rear wheel drive differential which requires a GL-5 lubricant".

Could someone please explain the discrepancy and let me know if it is safe to try this product?

Thanks in advance for any help!

ckalkhof, I posted the exact concern a few months ago when I too decided to try MT-90. I hope Jim or others will reply to this subject again; I believe the analysis to my question was that this type synthetic was not available when our cars were manufactured (mine is 87 turbo), so the "quality" of today's synthetic disarms any problem that may have resulted from using a GL-4 oil, where a GL-5 should have been used. But certainly, I am no engineer. I felt the MT-90 was still a little too notchy in mine. As I've posted before, I tried Royal Purple also. I now use mobil 1 75W90; I recommend you give that a try. It is GL-5 & best by far in my transaxle.

Edit: See my "TRANSM. REDLINE MT90 NEED HELP FAST"

thereto.
