Broken Trunk Release

When popping the trunk on my 89 the other day, the latch broke free from the release mechanism. So now the latch lifts up and down without any tension - I assume there was some cable attached to it. How can I open my trunk? Is there some cable I can re-attach to the latch?

There is a procedure on LEW to "fix" this. Unfortunately it requires drilling the rear panel, although at the end of the document, someone has a different way without permanent damage being done.
