Esprit vs Formula One
Discussion
Has anyone compared dimensions of the Esprit to Lotus Formula One cars circa '76-'80? Length, Wheelbase, Track, Weight Distr. etc
The Esprit as a whole seems to be such a close cousin to F1 cars of the era, that I am curious just how much Lotus Formula One engineering technology was actually injected into the development of the Esprit.
What about those high profile tires? They still use them today.
Heres a few shots of a 1978-Type79-F1... 01 has a similar looking rear suspension; 02 is here because its my idea of the ultimate V8 conversion, and 03 is just to enjoy! Jan

I am really not sure about how similar these cars are as I am away from home and therefore away from the library I have managed to collect...
But, where did you get these great photos of the F1???? The Lotus F1 cars of this era have been my favorite for ever and I'd kill to get up close to one without a crowd!
I have seen one run recently at Indy, but only in parade. i got to get close after, but the 1000 plus people around me crowded out the ability to see it and there was no way we could touch.
Truly a great machine...
I'll get to looking into the ways these cars are similar when i get home and post what I come up with...

Hi Cameron..I have a 7 more shots of this car and 5 of the Type-91. I have to admit, the photos I found after an exhaustive web search for pictures of the early Lotus F1 cars. Cant have enough detail shots of F1 cars IMO. They are truly works of art.
If you like, I can post the rest of them here (if others are interested as well) or email them to you. Jan

Feeel free to e-mail them to me (autocross7@aol.com) as I would love to have such great shots! I can say that the most impressive thing about the Lotus F1 cars I that have been fortunate enough to see run as an adult is the sound. At the 'parade' in 2000 at Indy the 79' was back in the pack a bit. A couple Mcclarens and a Ferrari came by at around 150mph +/- with this rather high pitch "spin" sound. Then the lotus came by - the driver obviously trying to not overtake the McClaren in front of him - and the sound was incredible! (worthy of description - but impossible)It grumbled by giving me the impression that it was angry that it could not be "free" to rev up to the top...
Thanks for offering to send the photos!

I have an NGK poster from 1979 or so with the type 79's of Mario and the other guy (I forget, sorry) going around a track. Got it at an auto parts store in 1979 in Slidell, LA and I've been carrying it around since: Through 6 moves, 6 careers, etc. I need to frame it and put it up somewhere. I actually had more than one. Sold one on eBay a few years ago, gave one to the head of Neurosurgery in NOLA when I was applying there, who happens (happened? 1997, haven't kept up) to be a car guy with an original Seven he was restoring. (We mostly talked cars during the interview. I should have ranked them first... Hindsight.) I still have one left. Few creases, but in general, pretty good condition.

Hey Jan
The rear suspensions are somewhat similar but just a little. The hubs are basically the same shape along with lower link attachment. That's about all I see that could be similar to our '83s.
While at the USGP this year Mario Andretti was there and I wish I had a piece of my Esprit for him to autograph. That would have been something. Next year I'm going to take a piece just in case. Now what part can I take??

Jan, thanks for the e-mail. All the photos came trough fine. Great shots too I might add. I'd like to know who ons the 79' as it appears to be one of the private cars.
...as for what parts to take for autographs... The roof panel of course! It comes out easy and has handles for carry!
