Thanks for the help people, after about two weeks of struggling the passenger side (UK) fuel tank is out. I constructed a engine stand in the pit and took off the engine legs towards the front of the car but did not really get any movement of the tank, so
got tank out by removing fibreglass off inner lip of body - which is not seen as is covered by plastic. Chargecooler removed, amd grove created in fibreglass just above the wheel arch to allow the U shaped metal extension of the petrol tank to pass. This i will patch up with fibreglass once the tank is put back in.

Tank was rusted underneath - not got a clue how water got in - from below proabaly? But i am not going to put the foam back in - some rubber inserts as they will not absorb any water and will allow water to drain away from the bottom of the tank.

Again many thanks - only had the car a month!

Water comes in through the vents, used to allow gas to escape through the tube.

In aircraft, we always drain the fuel tank about 100 mL everytime we fly. Why? To check for water accumlation from condensation. If the plane has sat for any length of time, 1-2 days, there will be a small amount of water, no doubt.

Cars, no doubt, have a fair amount of water in each tank rusting away. No way around it - the tanks are vented to atmosphere and the atmosphere has water in it, thus water in the tanks. It did not "seep in" though the bottom. Just no way around it. However, various baffles and trap doors help or solve the problem although these are not on Lotus fuel vents.
