Remember me saying that the S3 kept jumping out of reverse, but not if I select the gear AT the 'box, then jump in and start up?
Well Hilly amongst others suggested that the crossgate cable might be out of adjustment, but I felt that it was the fore & aft travel that was at fault.
So I extracted the rear (curved) shift linkage and checked the joint at the front end. It's in good order, so I unscrewed it 1.5 turns, put it back together and hey presto, no more popping out!
HOWEVER... whilst I had the thing in bits, I discovered that the pivoting arm (not a bellcrank as such, but you know the one I mean) alongside the engine is slacker than a Middlesbrough schoolie (which, to be fair, DOES take some doing ).
So I think what's happening is that the pivot is so worn, the shift action is all to bu99ery as a result. In fact, I think the forward shift link (to the gear lever) is hitting the chassis somewhere as a result, 'cos there's a definite squeak on fore & aft movement. Perhaps rectifying the pivot will cure this; it'll certainly cure the imprecision.
The slight drawback, of course, is that the pivot is er, pivoting, on the right-hand engine mounting
Guess where this is leading...
