next question - a bit harder....

as you know this week i do a driving school --- 3 more sleeps. -- and i went for the tech insp today.
the car was on a hoist and we shook the wheels to feel wheel bearing play.. and man,,, the right rear wheel was wobbling all over the place. There was at least a 1/4 inch play of the wheel...
the centre nut was loose, we tightened it and all seems well no noise, or anything ever..........
i am just kinda surprised about this nut being loose........
not too cool...
anyone ever seen this?

Yes the bearing wears and if one follows the directions to adjust it tight then slacken the nut to the next locking position. It usually is detected in a pre drive inspection before one tracks a car. A lot of drivers routinely check for play even for the street. The check will also detect loose tie rod ends and suspensions. All one has to do is grip the tire and push it back and forth to check for play. Also a good one is have the wheels unloaded, use a bar and move the wheel upwards to check for excessive play in that direction too.

Consider yourself lucky! When I got the wobbly wheel with my car, everything was tight and the bearing was bad. Keep an eye on it!

BTW, it sounds like you're going to a very thorough school. That's good.

the tighten then loosen thing is for the front bearings.. not the rear. the rears need to be super tight.. 280Nm as I recall....

I think all is well with the car now.. AC, heat, fan, whilstle gone... i found a vacuum leak at the exhaust flapper.. now the pump does not cycle on and off ...
I am pleased for a while..........

I just had to tighten mine also. I thought I had a bad bearing with a vibration at speed but when I went to replace it the wheel nut was finger tight. All better after it was tightend.

Hi All,
Actually its fairly common for the Esprit that the front wheel bearing gets loose. "They do that all, Sir"

Check them every year !!!

Mine was loose when I got it. I thought I would need a ball joint or tie rod end from the feel, but found the RF bearing was just loose. The PO had new bearings put in about 15K miles before.
