On/off Grinding sound

(V8 Esprit 96)
This "grinding" noise comes on sometimes when driving, and sometimes from the start. I say "grinding", but is more of an ocilaating sound, like a pipe moving inside another pipe without proper lubrication. It is permanent once the engine starts and does not seem to be affected by the gas. Has anyone else ever encountered this?
