I am currently looking to purchase an Esprit very soon, and would like to know how important the rear spoiler is?

I am currently looking at 1990-1995 models and some people have added newer style rear wings! I would like to have it without the rear wing....

Does it effect the handling, stability etc...?

Cheers

Well, I do not unfortunatly have any numbers or any "real data" for that matter. However, I know that the factory lid spoiler on the MX-5 provides about 15% more down force above 85mph +/-. The Esprit wings are quite a bit larger, but there seems to be several different wings. The later wings are mounted higher and have a bit more curve. This def. helped the rear view!

In any case, I would venture to say that until you are really haulin', there shouldn't be much difference. However, as stated, I could be VERY incorrect.

Hope some real datat gets posted...

Later models such as the GT3 and V8 GT ran without spoilers. These cars however have a larger built-in body spoiler (section above the number plate)than earlier stevens cars.
But i'd say if Lotus themselves thought the spoiler could be an option on the V8 then it is more for looks (and chronic engine access ) than for anything else.

Perhaps.

PS I quite like the V8/S4 wing. My SE wing gives crap rear view but i'm gonna keep it still.

My V8-GT does not have a wing but has a larger transom (lip) spoiler as paul said.

Kato has de-winged his 93 (?) SE hi-wing with no ill effects.

There will almost certainly be a reduction in high speed stability if you take off a factory wing, but wether you notice or not will largely depend on how much high speed driving you do. At legal uk speeds i doubt youd have any issues.
