I believe that with the introduction of the S4S in 1995 Lotus integrated the charge cooler system with the engine cooling system. If this is correct, isn't this a step backwards in terms of charge cooling efficiency? I have a '91 SE, and even on the hottest days my charge cooler is cold to the touch. I just can't imagine that a charge cooler hooked up to the engine cooling system is going to do the same job as one having its own radiator.

I ask this because I sometimes aspire to own an S4S for its power steering and other upgrades. However, because of this one basic design change, I am instead inclined to search for a good '93 1/2 SE or '94 S4.

I'm just curious about how other more experienced Esprit owners (or tech experts) might view this design change.

The chargecooler on my S4s is cool to the touch also. I can only assume Lotus knew what they were doing when they made the switch and there are good reasons for it.

I believe only the header tank is combined in the S4s.
Also found in the S4 and maybe some 93 1/2.
