Hi there,
One of the jobs that needs doing on the car is to get the speedometer repaired (1988...VDO i think).

Has anyone had this job done and any reccomendations?

I have recently been in touch with Speedograph and they have been very helpful but give a turn around time of 4 weeks!!!! They do say they have had 'some success' with esprit speedos.

If I can't get this fixed is there an alternative unit that can bolt and go? Or would I be best to put it in the hands of the professionals and have an electronic (sensor instead of cable) type fitted?

Any help gratefully recieved - speedo comes out next weekend....just a case of knowing what to do and the best considered course of action.

Many thanks for your help.

Just ge tit rebuilt, a cheap easy fix. A lot cheaper if you remove the unit yourself. At bit more difficult on the pre 90 cars as the pod must be lifted out of place. 90's and later just the pod cover comes off.

Calvin,

FYI on the G cars, you don't need to remove the binnacle to get the speedo out. Just the front plate, access to the cable and mounting screws is all there once the panel is removed. Happy Motoring!..Jim'85TE

Hi guys - Know how to remove it (pod off as an S car)...just wanted to know where to get it serviced.

Speedograph have quoted 90 pounds (or thereabouts!) and 4 weeks to do it. They must be busy!

Thanks

I had mine fixed last summer. I used www.speedchk.com. They had a quick turn around and are a certified VDO repair shop. I don't remember the exact repair price, but I believe it was around $150.

Steve,

I got mine repaired by www.sjsportscars.co.uk last summer.

It cost about 60 quid & took around a month.

Cheers,

Is that the case on an 88?

Also a month at SJ for speedo repair seems long. I have had mine redone with new movements and worm drive and it was in by 10am and out by 3pm at a VDO shop.

Thanks for all your replys guys - very helpfull - although sjs suggested I use the my 'local' dealer (speedograph) as their turn round/cost is similar.

Calvin...where was the VDO shop?

Is it UK based?

best regards

Let me know if you ever need to go to an electronic speedo, as I have retrofitted a Caerbon speedo from greengauges.com (UK) on my 91SE. The wheel speed sensor output is available on the ECU connector, and I sorted the power wiring connections etc..

Unfortunately it is in the USA. We have many shops like it here. Many are same day turn around and costs in between 100-$200 USD. Should be just as easy to fix there in the UK.
