Thanks Dave, here comes the explaination.

I fisrt noticed it at about 70mph in 5th the car started stuttering, it would slow down then speed up now it is stuttering quite badly I am driving it very carefully and am unable to accelerate in any gear other than 1st or 2nd

Are you sure it's fuel and not electrical?

I have had similar problems when I replaced my petrol tank.
First I replaced the fuel pump which only takes about half an hour to change even on your drive. You have to remove your undertray which is 8 screws. Then simply loosen the strap around the filter.
The other could be electrical, damp etc. Mine did a similar thing once when I got water in my engine bay. WD40 sorted it out.
Lastly I had a flood just before christmas from the drains from the bath. I had to quickly undo the downpipe and water splashed all over my car. It started the next day buy very spluttery. Day after nothing. After cleaning the plug wells out, plugs etc. it turned out that the plugs had gone. New plugs solved the problem.

I did wonder if it may be a spark plug problem, do you think that would be the best thing to try first.

Yes, plugs first, they are only a couple of quid each and very easy to access. Fuel filter is about £7 or so. Dizzy cap £5 and rotor arm about £3.
I would try these first.
Dizzy cap is a pain so try the others first.
