Turbo R.I.P. - Rebuild Suggestions?
Discussion
Hi All,
My turbo finally passed away on Friday (R.I.P.) – It was a track day so I guess it was just too much for the little guy
I have it removed from the car and I am trying to decide what to do with it. I have looked at upgrading it to a Super 60 and some other stuff like a Hybrid T3 –T04E etc. It is all a bit confusing; trying to figure out the best upgrade so I figured I would post here and see if I can get the advice of any experts out there on what to do with it.
I would like to keep the rebuild under $1000 and get the best bang for the buck.
I am running a TEC3 ECU so throwing any extra required fuel in there to support the upgraded turbo is pretty easy.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark – 88 Turbo

Dang, Mark. You have troubles. Try contacting John at http://home.netcom.com/~wceng/ I have known him (via internet lists, etc.) for years and he is very knowledgeable. He has an Esprit turbo setup he put a lot of time in developing. Tell him I sent you.

Dr. Hess,
Thanks for the info. on WC Engineering. I would love to get his setup (been looking at it for a while) but by the time I am done it would be around $2k which is a bit rich for my blood right now.
Don't feel bad for my troubles though Dr. Hess, I ask for it (that's what I get for all the mods. I have done that dyno'd me in at 340hp last week, gotta expect breakdowns).
Bill,
You do the twin turbo thing first, maybe then you will be able to see a little more than the back of my car when we are on the track (unless I wave you by AGAIN of course!)
Lots of fun though

340 is pretty good, all right. You have an intercooler?
Well, if John's setup is too much for you, you might try emailing him and telling him what you have to work with and what you are looking for and see if he has some recommendations. He is a very helpful person. He is on the Yahoo TE list, and like I said, we have been corresponding for probably five years now. Back in MR2 days and still on the Toyota Mods list.

Hi Dr. Hess,
I understand where you are coming from on the reliability thing. When things go wrong (like now) I feel the same way, however when I see that boy racer in the Vette or Saleen disappearing in to the distance through my rear-view mirror it just all seems worth it sometimes
I try to look at it this way: I have a buddy (the one who did the porting etc. on my head, a race guru) who has been begging me to let him drop a 700hp Chevy race engine in it that he built (apparently weighs about the same as my current 4 banger). He even says he will do the work for free and modify a suitable gearbox to fit if I just pay for the parts (he's retired so he gets bored I guess). I have restrained myself from that one just to keep most of the car "Lotus", I think putting the Chevy engine in there would be going too far, sooo... my mods are middle of the road in my mind.
That’s how I justify it to myself anyway.

Hey Mark,
I guess it is a matter of what you want and how big your wallet is. My 89 non-SE is plenty fast for me. Certainly fast enough to get me into trouble as it is. I am not worried about Saleens or ZO6's.
Dropping in a V8 is tempting. My all time favorite V8 is the Lexus (Toyota) 1UZFE. Normally aspirated, ultra low emissions, Toyota reliability and bone stock the same HP as a stock twin turbo Lotus V8 (give or take). Awesome motor. All aluminum too and about 27 inches cubed with the AC compressor on.

Mark, I may have a couple options for you. I have sent a couple emails to a friend who runs his own turbo shop to see what he can offer. I'll let you know as soon as I find out from them.
Was that 340HP to the wheels? What do you have done to your car other than the TEC3 what does the car have?

No, unfortunatly not, 340 at the crank. I have had the head ported, upgraded fuel system, pushing more boost, intercooler, blah, blah, blah. Goes like stink, just breakes down a lot
Thanks on the turbo thing by the way.

Still very respectable. Probably works out to somewhere around 290ish at the wheels. Still real nice, especially in a light, beautiful car that can handle.

yeah, cars tend to do that when they push more power than they are supposed to. Still, just some extra maintenance curbs most problems. My daily driver has ~400whp (almost 3x what she has from the factory) and it only requires a little extra love to keep her going on a regular basis... unless I do something stupid to break her, like recently.

No problem. I'll keep you posted.
The 1UZFE is in the Lexus LS400 and SC400's. The 97 up's, if I recall, are the ones to get, as they have direct coil on plug (no dizzy), and more HP. The latest one, a 2 or 3UZFE, I forget (from LS/SC 430's), is 4.3L v. 4.0L for the 1UZFE and is rated at about the same hp but a little more torque. The factory install gives up a lot to quietness and space fitting, too, if you just look at it. Pathetic exhaust manifolds, intake designed for whisper quiet v. air flow, etc. Some ponies for the taking there. There are enough of the cars around that you can get the motors at junkyards too. My Mother-in-Law has a 99 LS400 and I do all the maintenance on it. Really nice. Step on the gas and hang on. I think my Esprit will beat it, but I don't think my 20v MR2 could. Not bad for a luxury car that gets 24 MPG.
I think Kylie's husband is into these motors down in KiwiLand if you want more hand's on experience with them. Someone somewhere (OZ?) makes a bell housing to fit to a Renault gear box as used in 89 up's. Not sure about the Citroen box you have, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone in OZ made one. They use both gearboxes in GT40 replicas, so that is what you need to search on.

Mark & Dr.Hess here's a link Simon was showing me the other night, the engine could fit, but sounds like its tight. The other thing a comment was made in this link that some Oz guy is racing an esprit with one in, so would be cool to track him down.

Can post you pics of Simon's shiny engine if you like, amagine all polished alloy engine, would look lovely eh! His is out of a early 1990's Toyota Crown, they were luxury limos in their day. Simon's done some nice mods to the engine.
