I'm looking to buy an 89 non-SE. As a guy who doesn't do much monkey-ing around the engine - can I tell which system it uses?

It has grey sideskirts if that helps with the dating...

I'm think all U.S. 1989 non-SE's have the GMP4 electronic fuel injection. Almost the same system as the SE. One quick way to check for an '88 or '89 is that the '89s have a fuel rail with the associated injector bits and wires all located near the intake cam cover. It would probably help to have a look at pictures of engine compartments on E-bay. The U.S. '88s have inboard rear disc brakes with fairly deep dish rear wheels. The '89s have outboard rear discs with the rear wheels looking almost the same as the front. The tail pipe on an '89 exits on the left, the '88 on the right (I think).

In the US; the last Bosch car was the 88, if you get an 89 it will more than likley be the GM ECU.

The bosch systems will also have a distributor while the GM uses a coil pack system(like that of a motorcycle ). One good thing about the Gm engine management system is that parts are down rignt cheap if you use the cross referenced part and buy it from your local auto parts store of dealer as compared to buying from Lotus. Plus this system is very reliable.
