who has a 1988 esprit.. no spark
Discussion
I beleave I have a ecu problem. If u read the want rev over 3200 post. I went out in the garage tonight to check the car out. I started the car and it ran fine till u got the rpms over 3500 or so and would sound like it would miss. but run smooth on idle till about 3k. while idiling the car just quit. I hooked up a timming light and the car will only spark one time when i go to start it. I would say when the alt went out it missed up the ecu. who has a 88 model . I would like to send u my ecu and see if it works on urs? I dont mind buying a new one as long as thats the problem.
I have an 88', but I can't be of any help as I am in the process of pulling her gear box out to replace the clutch. In the short run I have also pulled the old vacume lines and all the rear susspension so it can be cleaned and greased properly... If it was together I'd be more than happy to plug up your box! Sorry, I hope you get it sorted out...
Drive topless!!!

Hi,
You do not really have an ECU in the classic sense. On the Bosche injected cars, it's much more of a fuel computer. These are pretty bulletproof, so I suspect your problem lies elsewhere.
Spark is more a function of the distributor and ignition amplifier. The system uses a Hall Effect distributor and will not spark unless rotated at >50-75RPM. Using a timing light of course you are only measuring 1 cylinder which of course will only spark once for every crank rotation. Check all leads, both low and high tension. There is a remote possibility that the low tension lead inside the distributor body has failed. This lead attaches to the advance plate inside the distributor and so is forced to move a the distributor advances the timing. Over time, it can become brittle and actually break. If nothing else is found, consider this possibility.
Sounds more to me like the one of the various relays in your ignition box. Check these for proper operation. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring!... Jim'85TE
