Road Cycling in the Brecon Beacons
Discussion
Planning a long weekend next year for some mates, don't know the area but there seems to be a lot of almost complete information on the net.
I think we'll stay in Abergavenny and ride out. Or would Hay on Wye be a better base? Or maybe more west? We'll probably ride 3 days, one long day and two shorter ones.
Want to do the Gospel Pass, is it better south to north or the other way round? From Hay or from Aber? Or should we do both climbs?
Does anyone have any route files and recommendations they could post? Cheers!

Hi, I live nearby, so can advise on some of my favourite routes....I think we'll stay in Abergavenny and ride out. Or would Hay on Wye be a better base? Or maybe more west? We'll probably ride 3 days, one long day and two shorter ones.

Gospel Pass is definitely better approached from Hay (good coffee and cakes at Eve's in town centre). At this time of year, the descent into Abergavenny from the Gospel Pass summit can be a muddy with farm traffic on the roads. An alternative descent is to re trace your steps from Gospel Pass, then descend to Abergavenny via Longtown.
The Golden Valley route from Hay to Pontrilas via Peterchutch is also good, and you should climb Llangynidr mountain (Llangynidr to Beaufort road). drop me a PM, and I can send you some route links...
I'd work the tumble into a route if you are in the area:

I don't tend to stray that far into wales when I go that way, but I'd also recommend going by Tintern Abby if you head out of the Brecon's.
