Are there any go-to brands when it comes to saddles for the *ahem* larger and heavier cyclist? I have a Giant hybrid bike which I will be using as part of my daily commute, but the standard saddle isn't comfortable at all.

A giant bike with a small saddle? Well that doesn't sound right.

Go to a bike shop and get measured. It's all about sit bone width

As above, you need one that fits you. Took me a while this year, even with a fit - I borrowed a number of saddles until I found one that truly worked for me - I know others buy, try, sell on ebay. If you don't already wear them, get padded shorts.

not sure if this applies, however for how long have you been riding?
It's very very normal for your bum to ache after you haven't been riding for some time the first few times.
after that you just get used to it and you don't feel anything anymore.

how heavy are you?

I was going to reply with the 'how long have you been riding' question too. I found any sort of saddle deeply unpleasant when I started. In fact I think much of the first 40k route I did (where we stopped at a coffee shop half way) involved getting out of the saddle after the first 15km or so!

If you do end up changing saddles it's worth borrowing some demo saddles from a local bike shop and seeing what feels good.

I have the thin little standard Giant Contend 2 saddle. I'm 102kg and comfy for 18 mile rides without padded shorts. Not been further yet though...

The Charge Spoon saddle seems to be good for fitting a large percentage of the population, the same saddle is also sold as the Madison Flux.

I have three, and a Knife. I dread to think what a Fork saddle would look like though!

I'm a FB and I find the Charge Spoon very comfortable. I'm onto my third now.

I always post this when the saddle question comes up.

There's an article at this link which explains what factors come into it with saddles and should help you find some comfort.
https://www.cervelo.com/en/engineering-field-notes...

Briefly:-
- Saddle width and the width of your sit bones are crucial as others have said, if the saddle is too narrow your sit bones will be over the edge and your weight will be on your soft bits. Too wide and your legs will rub
- Too squashy a seat is not comfortable, you need the weight to be borne by the sit bones not the sensitive parts of your anatomy in between, a comfy looking squashy saddle will spread the weight out too much
- A saddle needs to be flat enough for you, if it is too arched your sit bones may not allow your body to clear the hump
- consider a cut-out, some find this is needed
