Hi all,

What works for you in terms of data field configuration? How many pages? Auto or manual page scrolling? What metrics?

Just got a super cheap second hand Edge 520. I don't have Di2/eTap or a power meter, but even still, I seem to have added too much information to the Garmin screens - too hard to read and too much to digest, and it's also scrolling through pages too quickly at the moment, because i'm struggling to see what i'm looking for on the screens at any given time.

Interested to see what you find useful, and what you don't.

It's a shame you can't lay it out in the Garmin Connect app - it's fiddly to do it on the device - unless I am missing something?

Thanks,

Matt

Too many data fields, and too many scrolling pages if I'm honest. Certainly more than I need to have at my finger tips while riding. It's not like I'm actively "training" for anything so I could probably do without a lot of the data while out on the road.

I'm using an Edge 500 for cycling and a Forerunner 910XT for walking/running, and I've configured too much data on both devices really. I ought to have a look at them and trim the number of fields/pages really...

Page 1 - time, speed, distance, HR, cadence.

Page 2 - 3s Power, NP Lap power, lap time, cadence, HR, power zones.

I don't have auto scrolling enabled. If on a training ride I stay on page 2, if I have taken a bike with no PM I stay on page 1 and enjoy the scenery a lot more.

I have an edge 1000 which means I can realistically have 8 data fields which are all still readable. I tend to have Power, speed, average speed, cadence, time, distance, TSS and heart rate. I've got loads of screens set up and if I need to change screens I use the top button on the hoods (ultegra di2) which is handy.

I might just have a video on setting up the data screens on the Edge 520:

https://youtu.be/rnJiNup833w

Its a bit old and before i got a decent mic so apologies for crap sound. It is a bit of a faff as you say - its much easier on a touchscreen device such as the 820 or 1000.

I run an 820 as my go to GPS and only typically use 1 screen with 7 data fields if I'm riding a route i know. As mentioned in the video 7 fields is a nice compromise that gives you 3 larger fields and 4 smaller ones wheras 10 can get a little cluttered.

If I'm riding an unknown route and have uploaded a course then i will also have the mapping screen with 2 data fields setup and the elevation screen again with 2 data fields (1 of these is always invariably speed).

I don't use auto scroll as it basically means its never on the page i want to look at. The touchscreen is a bonus on the 820 as its easy to swipe between pages. If I hit a hill on an unknown route I can swipe to the elevation page and pace myself as i can see whats coming and how far to go.

If I had Di2 gearing id probably have another screen setup incorporating gears and battery level but sadly I'm on poverty spec ultegra still smile

Heres a video of the screens on my 820 - for ease map starts at 1.30, data pages 2.53 and elevation at 5.16:

Thanks everybody! Some of these make much more sense than mine - need to sit and have look at my setup smile

Got to turn off or change the cadence alarms too, were driving me nuts yesterday.

Speaking of alarms...
Anyone else regularly setting off the incident detection when pulling up at traffic lights or most embarrassingly for men in front of the audience of hilarious geezers at the security desk entrance to my work carpark?

Maybe I just need to learn to be smoother with the controls!
