If you are going to come at Gethin Butler, you need to come very hard.

Ian To’s record attempt fell by the wayside. DNF

Another one that talked a good game but could not come close this time.

Quite. Although surely that’d make cycling difficult?

Makes me wonder what Gethin would have done on like for like equipment.

The record is 17 years old already.

Ian's a very strong and experienced rider but I think it will be 'easier' (hesitate using that word here) for Michael Broadwith to step up in distance than it is for Ian to step up in pace. Even things like fuelling are much closer to 24 hour TT than to ultradistance racing, so I think Michael's experience is more relevant to the LEJoG record. As you'd expect from any major record (or popular Strava KOM), Gethin set his benchmark in nigh-on perfect conditions. It will take more than just ability on the bike to take this one. FWIW, if he can find a decent weather window I do think Michael has what it takes.

I don't recall perfect conditions - it rained on and off throughout and was pretty grim IIRC in the Scottish segment

Gethin refers to that in this piece from 2004

Fair play to anyone who gives it a go I say, pretty ballsy even if it doesn't come off
