bike new price?
Discussion
im starting to cycle again and I want to upgrade from my 2007 Roubaix to something a bit more aggressive
use will be weekend rides no commuting if I do will carry on using the Roubaix for that
I have my eye on a new Specialized , wondering what kinda discount do people expect from their bike store or do they literally just pay RRP? Its one of the higher end bikes I would like to enquire about

Depends how desperate the bike shop is, how long they've had it sitting there and time of year (new models start appearing in October)
I paid £1750 for my MTB (from £2200), it was discounted due to it being October, they wouldn't give me interest free credit on the discount price but offered me another £100 off instead, job done.
Road bike was £800 (from £1000) for the same reason, guess it's lucky my birthday is in the autumn so birthday money gets put to good use
I would never pay list price for a bike unless it's something mega rare and special that never gets discounted. Might struggle this time of year though to get huge amounts off a current model.
Some bike manufacturers won't let bike shops advertise reduced prices online, so the shops make up for it by including free kit in the deal if you pay full price which can work out quite well.

Wait a couple of months until the 2019 models come out and buy a 2018 bike, maybe 30% is about the right level of discount then?
My local Giant store wouldn't knock me a penny off 2 bikes I was looking to buy at the same time with total RRP of about £5500, they would give me some free pedals though!
No thanks! I ended up buying one of the bikes from a shop about 50 miles away with 20% off and the other online delivered from Italy with about the same saving.
I am all for using local shops and I would have if they even made an effort to do a deal. Instead i saved over £1000 by going elsewhere.

Alternatively if you know the size you want, buy from one of the online only retailers as you will get a higher specced bike:

I really can't see people getting 30% off the popular models/colours. 10% more realistic. Also bikes in the sales will be the unpopular colours/sizes that are difficult to shift. That is what sales are My local Giant store wouldn't knock me a penny off 2 bikes I was looking to buy at the same time with total RRP of about £5500, they would give me some free pedals though!

However, you can always ask the shiop if they can do you a deal. They might throw in a voucher for some kit or maybe a free service. Pedal-On offer podium points, so you can buy accessories with those points.

Interesting you mention Pedal On. I bought my Trek Emonda road bike there in 2015 at full RRP. It was "one up" from what I wanted too, to avoid a colour I didn't like. But that was early in the season, and the Podium Points deal was worth a lot. Shoes, helmet, cages, lights, and speed/cadence sensors.

Then a year (or more) later, I bought a 2015 Giant Anthem in there. Ticket price was £1500, they wanted rid of it (only two of them left in stock) for £1100. In the end I found another on line shop that had the only other size medium left in the country, and they had it on for £900 which Pedal On reluctantly matched. So a £600 chunk off. The catch was that there were no podium points on "sale" bikes. So the Podium Points scheme can pretty much equate to price discounts.
Just to endorse what someone else said really. You can do a deal with most shops, but only if they are hungry for your business, or are keen to see the back of older unsold stock. Something that's current, and in demand, won't really see much discounting early in the season, nor at the peak of the season. And beware holding out for end-of-season discounting too. I got bitten on the arse by that, when I waited before buying a Cannondale that was very well reviewed that year. There was basically nothing left in stock to get a discount on and I ended up without a new bike that time...
