So, I have a Strava account with sharing to other social networks all switched off.

Why then, within minutes of following someone who I have never contacted, not got details of in any shape or form on any other network, would Facebook show them as a suggested friend? The information can only have come from Strava, their privacy policy clearly states any of my info that they share with third parties is de-indentified

Anyone else had this happen?

That's one hell of a coincidence isn't it!?

Many companies have conveniently refused to answer yes or no as to whether this practice goes on so I think it's fair to assume they don't given I'm sure they'd be honest with their users and not prioritise profit over privacy...

Look at it from the other way, its probably facebook trawling your devices and other accounts and suggesting based off what it finds..

My Facebook and Strava are linked and 'friends of friends' do pop up on Facebook as a suggestion.

However I can't ever recall following an 'interesting stranger' with no common friends appearing as a suggestion.

Is this person linked with any of your FB friends?

I'm sure it will be Facebook. Do you sign into Strava using it?

Hi, no I always use my Strava login and have never connected the two, the only common factor was the fact I hadn't cleared any cookies having been on Strava and before I went on Facebook, can Facebook mine data out of another application's cookie perhaps? Need a tech savvie teenager !!

The guy who was suggested by FB wouldn't be a friend of any of my limited number of friends, I have racked my brain trying to find a connection and can only conclude that either Strava fed data to FB or FB mined the data somehow.

I am using a Chromebook for anyone interested!

Could it have worked the other way?

I.e the person you have followed on strava has his strava and facebook accounts linked, so his facebook suggests you to him as a friend. Facebook know it's suggested you as a friend to him so closes the circle and offers you that same suggestion?

This is certainly possible.

Strava has Facebook (and Twitter) tracking cookies on it, it figures out who you are based on those. Much like adverts follow you around from website to website.
