I need to change the rear pads on my winter bike but don’t have any spare aluminium specific pads. I do have loads of carbon ones though.

Will the carbon pads work well on alloy rims?

Oh you’ll laugh when it’s wet. Nothing, nothing more nothing then you may eventually stop.

I wouldn’t.

Much worse. Alloy pads on carbon rims = destroyed rim (eventually). Carbon pads on alloy rim = destroyed teeth (quite quickly, and pretty well instantly if it's wet). Always fun if you have a service course alloy wheel thrown on when you're running carbon rims. Had this happen twice, but fortunately on the rear in both cases.

As above they won’t damage your wheel but they’ll be terrible stoppers - I wouldn’t run them for any longer than you need to

I took the advice and ordered a set from Wiggle. They arrived today so I’ll fit them this evening.
