Most likely the dpd driver saw that he was a hipster and expected him to stop at Whole Foods for a single origin coffee while he shops for some quinoa, kale & avocado. wink

Lol. The cyclist deliberately swerved into the side street to crash into the van laugh

If he'd just kept on riding along the road in a straight line, nothing would've happened.

Not trying to excuse the st DPD driver, but if you will ride a bike without working brakes, you are rather putting yourself in harm's way.

A bit harsh.

I personally wouldn’t ride a PF around Stoke Newington, I’m not sure why the rider thought it would be a good idea.
I hope he wasn’t injured.

As a cyclist myself I did find it strange that he chose to swerve in the same direction as the hazard.....

This kind of crash often happens to motorcyclists who've overcooked it, they look at whatever they don't want to hit, fixate on it and then ride into it.

I do think riding a PF on a busy modern high street like that is a brave choice, especially without a helmet. Perhaps on something smaller, more agile and with proper brakes he would have avoided that. Not to excuse the DPD driver, but this trip out, likely to buy vegan moustache wax or some other such frippery, would have ended better were it not undertaken on a PF.

The PF can only be braked from that little rear wheel (not on his one) and the tiny contribution that backpedaling gives. The 'safety bicycle' (Rover?) followed this design as it had equally sized wheels which could stop without the faceplant finishing touch. This guy is a Darwin award winner.

hopeful candidate at this stage surely? Unless you have further details of how it all ended between his jewels and the crossbar?

I hope he is OK too, that's a long way to fall. Ignoring any comments about kale/moustaches as they are irrelevant, but FFS riding an unbraked penny farthing at some speed in a built up area wearing black and no helmet kinda puts the onus on absolutely everyone else to keep the guy safe rather than taking a bit of ownership himself.

The DPD driver has screwed up big time and no doubt was in a massive hurry, but it's also entirely possible that he didn't "see" the guy as he was looking a bit lower, mistook this big tall black thing for a lamp post, or of course our ninja friend was perfectly camouflaged against something behind him. I actually feel quite sorry for the DPD driver too.

I continue to find it incredible that when motorcyclists always ride with their lights on, modern cars come with DRLs, and the done thing for a car such as a Caterham is to buy a really brightly coloured one, that any cyclist thinks wearing head to toe black because slimming/pro look/Rapha/cool/not my problem, needs their head examining. But that really is Darwinism in action I'm afraid!

obviously mr DPD needs to take stock but it could be something as silly as riding something that belongs in a circus and so out of place, and all in black as a silhouette, he just didnt recognise it properly as an approaching road user. Eyes to brain is a fascinating relationship and studies have shown you can simply make stuff up when experience doesn't meet expectation.

There was an impressive PF rider circulating up and down part of the A217 flattish stretch of the London-Brighton old crocks run 3 or 4 years ago.
Even he hadn't the b*lls to descend Reigate Hill. Even if he had, it would have been a mighty hard push to climb back up!

Maybe watch it again, he slows significantly with the pedals.
