Just dropping in to say I bought some Hunt wheels in April and for some reason I couldn't get the cassette to seat on the freehub. Kudos to Hunt. Had a chat with them about the issue and the sent me out a second freehub and a set of cone spanners to swap it out. Worked a treat.

I know they have had some bad press in the past, but I run two sets of Hunt wheels and they have both been excellent.

I have to say, I've not heard a bad word about them. I don't go on many forums though. I bought a set of the enduro wheels last year to replace my Roval wheelset. From the box they made a twanging sound, I contacted them and I was told to have the tensions checked. I did and the rear wheel was slightly loose on the drive side. They paid my invoice off and were great about the whole experience. The wheels have been spot on since. I will buy again and highly recommend them, customer service was faultless!

I was torn between Hunt and the cheaper Elite (Aliexpress) wheels for my road bike.
Asked the mechanic at my LBS and to my surprise he was full of praise for the Elite wheels and said almost every set of Hunt wheels he's seen has spoke tension issues.
Nothing a quick tune up can't sort, but given how good the Chinese stuff is becoming, I'm struggling to justify the extra cost of the Hunts.

Before anyone says it - by all accounts the customer service on AliExpress is excellent now too.

Be interested to see how you get on with Elite wheels.

I snagged my Hunts for £325. That's an aero 55mm alloy rim and about 1500g the pair.

For some reason lot on PH seems to hate them. I've only ever had positive experience personally. My carbon MTB wheels have been perfect over the years riding park and racing enduro. And I'm usually between 17.5 and 18.5 stone so not exactly kind to wheels.

Was that new from Hunt? Got a link lol that would be great

Edit - Just realised you said alloy - I'm after CF hence why the Elites are so tempting

A triumph of marketing over quality. They are generic products from the Far East with fancy stickers on.

I'm guessing you mean 35mm.

Exactly, best decision I ever made was to get a set of Hope wheels, been faultless in over 3000 miles

But are they really?

I've read plenty of articles and tests about the rim design of their deeper section/aero wheels. They seem to be bespoke rim profiles, unless I've been mislead and they are open-mould jobs.

Practically all carbon rims are from the Far East, even if the wheels are assembled elsewhere.

As have my hunts, and they're significantly lighter than the hope wheels my bike came on.

As for the generic catalogue components...why hire an aerodynamicist if you're simply pointing at far east carbon catalogue and going "want that one?

As for using standard parts...I'm all in for that as I could break a spoke abroad (or have a bearing st itself) and get it fixed at any bike shop.

ETA...if they're so st, they're doing well to hold a 4.8 on trust pilot over 16k reviews.

The only Hunt wheels I've had I was not impressed with, however

Are the rims really generic? What other wheels have the same rims then?

Significantly lighter and cheaper than the bontragers that came with my bike, mine have only 20,000km on so lets wait a bit longer to see if they fall apart then.

Please defend them all you wish however speaking from experience and having had a friend with a 7 week faff over a failed freehub on a set of Hunts, I would not use them.

The issue that came to light is that they are sourcing parts and even complete wheels from various factories in the Far East so far from standard parts and your wrong if you think parts are available from your local bike shop, my friend tried 20 different freehubs and nothing fitted.

Yes I accept that in the end Hunt helped but it was 7 weeks worth of hassle that should never have happened.

You may knock Hope but parts are readily available off the shelf, pretty standard size bearings as well.

DT Swiss, Hope, Mavic and even Shimano are just so little hassle to run

I'm confused...so you're saying that Hunt use generic catalogue parts yet when your mate tried to use generic catalogue free hubs they wouldn't fit.

My hope freehub wouldn't fit on my zipp Moto...nor would I expect it to.

My point was Hunt use standard bearing sizes and j bend spokes so I could pick up a spares from an LBS all over the world.

BTW I'm not knocking Hope at all. I've got well over a thousand quids worth of hope components in my garage, and their customer service is fantastic.

To be honest I am not sure who's hubs they use but I do know that Novatec ones did not fit and the other issue is that are using various suppliers in the Far East so it is very hard to identify spares, Hunt supplied 3 freehubs and none fitted.

Also they do not always use standard bearings

The above is exactly the opinions I've heard before, but my own experience simply doesn't bear it out.

Industry standard bearing sizes, readily available spares, very human customer support for a minor issue, easily interchangeable freehubs and even a nice little spares pack of spokes in the box.

Everyone can suffer low stock, even Hope (always the colour I want...) but I'm not sure why all the hate is written.

And yes, my wheels are 34s, not 55s. It's my TT wheels which are 55s.

I've just taken delivery of some Hunt 52 Carbon Aerodynamicist - RE:NEW for £549.00. Had to replace my old factory Alpina (Dolan) wheels after a very hot and hilly Switzerland trip. An unwanted expense, so thought I'd give them a go.

They look like new - complete with a 60 day ride/return plus 3 year warranty. Very quick as well, contacted me to check which hub was required yesterday and they arrived today.

Also, they're pretty local to me so not a huge trip should I have any issues.

No complaints about my Hunt Trail Wide (alloy) MTB wheels - lighter wheels and faster hub engagement than any other trail-duty wheels I could find available up to double the price, and they've remained true through plenty of rough treatment on a trail hardtail.

Just out of interest, what category were your Re:new wheels? I'm looking at a MTB wheel set and they're category B so I'm trying to see how good/bad they will be!
