Having trouble getting this almost tar like st off my chain and cassette etc. I've tried gunk, I've tried some aotogylm stuff, and although they partially work, its not getting it off well enough.

I want shiny chain, and I can't see to get that!

So its clear muc off or some crap like that won't cut it, but what is the best? Petrol?

Diesel cleans anything.

Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner is good stuff too but do not get it on your paint, or anodised aluminium.

Ultrasonic cleaners are supposedly the daddy. Reasonable sized ones (cassette sized) are for £100 or less. Larger ones (chain set etc) are a few hundred. I am watching one on Maplin and the day that it enters the sale will be the day that I have it!

I just soak mine in petrol overnight. Never had a problem getting them clean smile

Comma degreaser is also very good if you're in a hurry...

I think the one Halfords sells is Winns. Whatever it is, it's the only one I can usually find there. You just spray it on and watch everything NOT metal drip off.

Worth protecting/covering anything you're not wanting covered in black filth beforehand.

On my older bike, I used to clean the alloy rims with it. It improved braking performance immeasurably and stopped the squeaking (I had already lined up the brake blocks with a little leading toe in but they squeaked quite blood curdlingly). I wouldn't risk damaging disk brake pads with it though - it's quite aggressive.

White spirit is an incredibly effective way of getting rid of the grease and gunk, best to take the chain and cassette of the bike / wheel first mind and make bcensoredy sure you dont get it anywhere near any bearings.

I put the chain in a four pint milk carton with an inch of paraffin, lid on and shake. Repeat every couple of minutes whilst cleaning rest of bike and you will have a clean chain.

Also, when finished put used paraffin in a jar and when you need it next all the crap will have settled in bottom, and you can use again!

Machinemart do a superb degreaser. £4.99 (+vat). Put the chain in a small tub with lid, cover with degreaser/cleaner, put the lid on and shake occasionally. 10 mins later you will have a spotless chain. The degreaser is water based so it doesnt stink like normal degreasers and it is easy to dispose of.

Machinemart also sell a ultrasonic cleaner for £80. Ment to be very good.

Tested a couple.
Including Diesel.
Screwfix no nonsense alcohol degreaser was pretty good and foamy.
Somehow a combo seems best.

I've got a gallon of Granville brake cleaner under the bench as my usual go to option once Muc Off has given up. It's pretty nasty!!

This with knobs on. You can dilute it to incredible levels and it still works so a five litre can lasts for ages.

I've been using this in my chain cleaner tool and and it does a great job. Also use it in a squirty bottle and most stuff is gone after a blast with the hose pipe.
