And it looks like Bradley Wiggins is using an oval big crank ring on his bike. Any ideas? Has Biopace come back?

It's not uncommon in the modern peloton these days. Rotor Q-Rings are also popular.

That was what it was called. I keep telling all the kiddies that it was all the rage in the 90s until it wasn't any more.

I had a Biopace chainset, it was no better than a standard one. This explains why:

http://www.highpath.net/ says "Biopace-type rings: These gave Ovals a bad name in the 1980's because their crank offsets orientated them back-to-front on upright bicycles. This gave a higher gear to push through the dead-spots instead of a lower one, making matters worse, not better!"

I also thought this read 'watching Paris, Nice' i was most distressed to find out you ware talking about Wiggins' ring.
