After a ride this weekend where my feet went numb through being so wet and cold after just an hour (MTB) I need recommendations for waterproof options. Someone bought me sealskins about 15 years ago and they felt like the oddest shaped socks I've ever tried to wear. Are they still like that? Ideally thinner over thicker options

Yeah, the sealskins still feel odd. I'm paranoid of them failing too as I've got one pair which certainly aren't waterproof.

I came across this alternative recently but haven't got around to buying a pair yet:

I’ve had a pair of Endura waterproof socks and they’ve been pretty good

Not sure if they were the exact ones above. Seem a lot more robust than the Sealskins socks. Don’t feel like they have a ‘loose bag’ in them like the sealskins.

I've got goretex socks. I mostly use them for running where they keep feet warm and dry inside non waterproof running shoes. They double up as 'edge season' socks for cycling.

Whenever this subject comes up there is a strong consensus for dedicated winter boots. It's about this time of year that I swap to these. I use Fizik Artica which are really warm and comfortable. May need to try for sizing and maybe size up as you don't want to cut off circulation by using too think a sock.

I’m very happy with my Fox Defend Water socks - only a few months old but 100% waterproof so far and feel more normal than my previous sealskinz, though any waterproof or sock will feel different to normal socks due to the membrane

Agree re boots, I have the Fizik terra nanuq which are pricey but superb - warm and 100% dry. I only use waterproof socks in late autumn/early spring, with my regular 5-10’s; switch to the Fiziks with normal socks for the winter

I have a combination of Gore-Tex Five Ten Trailcross and knee-high Sealskinz when it gets really wet.

Can't wear the Five Tens without the high socks, as the water just pools inside! Similarly, I have some mid-shin Sealskinz but when it's really muddy and grim they're just not high enough

This is what I use. The Trailcross GTX's do work, but water still goes over the top sometimes. I have the Sealskinz and then some GoreTex or waterproof trousers that I try to seal over the 5/10 cuff.

I have tried Sealskinz, but much prefer these...

...if it's actually cold a thin pair of socks underneath, but as long as your core is warm then you shouldn't have too many issues with cold feet.
