Santa Pod questions
Discussion
Took my son to Flames and Thunder yesterday, an absence for me from watching drag racing since Blackbushe was open!!!
Some questions,
when and what is the best weekend to go there, the weather messed it all up yesterday with a lot of standing around. I want to see all classes racing and need a good one day event.
What HP are the top cars putting out?
It was a nightmare getting out does it always take ages?

The best events are the 2 FIA meetings which have the most big cars including a lot from Europe. One is in May and 1 in September so the weather should be OK though in 2008 both were near washouts. The latest Top Fuel cars are supposed to have around 8,000 hp although a lot depends on how they are set up, I'd guess that the ones yesterday would have been detuned a bit because of the conditions.
Santa Pod is always a nightmare to get out of with only the 1 entrance, if you want to get out quickly either leave before the final of Top Fuel or move your car at some point to a better place to get out.
The entry was a bit thin yesterday, although there were a lot of jet cars, 2 Top Fuel Cars and 3 Fuel Funnies there were not all the Methanol cars, Pro Mod, Pro Stock , Super Mod etc cars which are all quite fast and reasonably spectacular. At the FIA events you normally get 9 or 10 Top Fuel cars, next year there should also be 5 or 6 Fuel funnies, 8 alcohol funnies, 8 Top dragsters, maybe 30 Pro Mods etc so the days programme is very full.

gt3 i dont know what your budget is for spectating at the pod but if you want the best deal for spectating ,getting in and out of the pod, best toilet facilitys blah blah blah the way to go is buy yourself a vip ticket.
the ticket for the Fia meets are about £175 and the ticket price for the Msa national meets are i think around £115 ,you can get the correct price if you phone santa pod and ask to talk to kelly .
like WJM said i would also recomend you try to go to one of the two Fia meets if you want to see the best cars and bikes in europe battling in out,
the problem is if you spectate at a Fia meet you might find the national events a bit of a let down in terms of numbers of cars and bikes in the pro classes .
one other problem i know a lot of spectators are finding now with the bigger meets is that the banking is getting so packed its a bit of a mare for kids to see the racing unless you want to spend the whole day supporting them on your shoulders , of course theres the grandstand option. so why do they call them stands ? i though the whole idea was they are built so you can sit down ! but be aware you may end up standing up quite a lot !every time one of the pro classes come out everyone stands up! where as, if everyone stayed sat down you get a perfect view .

Thanks phil very kind, we will be back, I was well into rodding and drag racing back to the Blackbushe days, as I live near there.
Never got round to building a rod, houses took over, but now in my early forties I really fancy it, Ive been obsessed with V8s for ever, had about 5 variations.
I realised on sat that there is no substitute for V8!!!!
Strange thing is a mates wife told me only recently that her dad was Jim Read of Le Patron fame...totally out of the blue...wish Id known earlier.
My son is getting well into cars...good lad, and loved the Funny cars and the Jets.......that bank was useless and slippery and yes I had to hold him up all day...Seats next time.
