FIA Pro-Modifieds Head To Santa Pod

Top European dragsters head to Northants track for 1/4-mile shoot-out

Next Bank Holiday weekend (22-25 May), Santa Pod Raceway will play host to one of its biggest drag racing spectacles when the first round of the FIA European Pro Modified Championship commences.

Twenty-two fire-breathing dragsters from seven countries will line up at the Northamptonshire track to compete for victory not only in the first round of the championship, but also for overall glory from last years end-of-season final.

Rain halted play at the European Finals last year, so the championship decider will be conducted in between the weekend’s qualifying sessions. In addition to the European rounds, honours in the MSA British Championship are also up for grabs with reigning champion Philip ‘Bert’ Englefield taking on rival Andy Robinson.

The best of British will also have to take on the current European speed record-holder, Swede Mikael Lindahl in his 8.5-litre supercharged V8 engined 1967 Chevrolet Camaro bodied drag racer. He recorded a blistering

240mph top speed and sub 6.2sec quarter-mile time last season and is the reigning European Pro Modified champion.

Over 250 cars and motorbikes will take to the Santa Pod track over the weekend, ranging from exhibition vehicles to 300mph Top Fuel drag racers.

Full details of the race weekend can be found at the MSA Drag Racing website.

Ever been to Santa Pod for a proper FIA event?

What a waste of a post.

Pathetic - was it even worth typing?

I've taken my kids to Santa Pod several times and it's a great day out. I love F1, but even F1 can not get close to the feeling of watching these monsters burn rubber.

You can take out watching, seeing as you can actual feel them as they blast past, your chest vibrates, your ear drums explode... paradise biggrin

I made the mistake of standing behind a top fuel bike on start up, my eyes... THEY BURNED.

Not been to this for a few years but am going along this year with a few mates, and i have to say i cant wait. Like you have already said , and I always tell evryone, seeing a top fueller going full chat down the strip is something everyone should experiance at least once in their lifetime.
Cleaning up after a spill is the only annoying bit.

Standing near a top fueler on a full-bore start is one of the most visceral experiences you can have on this earth.

If you haven't done it, you really haven't lived.

Hmm....if the thought of full bodied cars with 2800bhp that accelerate to 240mph in 6.1 seconds doesn't excite you then perhaps you're on the the wrong website?

p.s that's me stood next to the car in the second pic ;-)

Well now, looking at Jimboza's previous posts in other topics I would say he is a troll.

He doesn't seem to like much of anything, so it is to be expected he would not like this.

Anyway, I'm sure we drag racing fans would more than welcome him at the strip, and once he had seen the Pro Mods, Top Methanol and Top Fuel (both dragsters and funny cars), he might change his mind.

Glad they are trying to sort out last years PM championship, not sure how that is going to fit in around qualifying, but it'll be good to get a definitive result.

fingers crossed for a dry weekend.

The tickets are quite expensive {£20 odd } and vary depending on the day, kids under 16 are free, you can book either 1 day or the full weekend or you can just turn up on the day. The actual cost is on the web site, with running order etc. The best day is probably Monday where the actual racing takes place amongst the big stuff but the Top Fuel cars qualify on both Saturday and Sunday and as it's less crowded you can experience the full blast {and if you have never seen one before it's something you will never forget}probably better. Actually a lot of the Sportsman cars these days are pretty impressive if you have never seen a dragster before and the Top Alcohol dragsters are very fast and impressive but once you have seen a TF or Fuel funny car do a full bore run you will really understand why so many of us love it. We can all tell you it's noisy but take it from me you will still be shocked the first time you see one.

The racing starts at 9am and normally the big stuff comes on about 11 am with a 2nd run in mid afternoon. Any rain or an accident or oil down slows the schedule.

You are best off near the start and you can get a good view either from the bank or the pit side grandstand {which is extra cost}. You can get very close to the cars in the paddock and if you are there early you should be able to stand near one or more of the fuel cars as they fire up. This is a trully impressive experience especially if they blip the throttle { it will nearly knock you off your feet} though watch the nitro fumes as it's like tear gas.

Hope thats some help.

Bill
