Experience of Pirelli P6000's on a trackday
Discussion
Yes I know it will depend on the car and driving style etc. but just wondering how these tyres stand up on a trackday (Donnington) as they do pretty well on the road for a grip to longevity trade-off.
I'll be using some with about 1mm of tread left on a mk3 mr2 which will be driven pretty hard, though despite this I'm a pretty smooth driver on steering and throttle in any car. I know how to drive quick and yet conservatively.
So by the PH collective experience of PHer's, can I expect them to break-up around the outside edge of the tyre? Will they heat up quick and grain/blister? Any means of reducing wear or heat-up - softer or harder pressures recommended? Will they turn to slicks nicely or are they liekly to show thread very soon after the tread has gone?
I already have a place lined up to get the tyres changed, but I was hoping to do this on the way home, not midday. Certainly I can expect new tyres (probably Pirelli's again) to heat-up much faster and grain badly.
It would be nice to have an idea in advance.
Ta!

not exactly a high-performance tyre but you should be OK if you pump the pressures up and make sure the sidewalls aren't rolling - it tends to be the shoulders that give way first.
who's track day are you doing? some organisers (BaT included :-) have mobile tyre support all day so you can run the existing tyres right down then get your set fitted at the optimum time.

P6000's are almost indestructible
- They don't wear very quickly on track & don't grip all that well either
(I think the 2 might be related). I've run them on 924S's with no issues at Donington, Elvington and Pembrey.
I don't think they would be much fun in the wet though, specially with no tread - Donington is slippery enough already.
You'll get more wear on brand new tyres, so you might be better advised just keeping a very close eye on your tyres during the day. Don't run pressures too low so you roll onto the sidewalls & don't run too high so you lose grip & just generate lots of tyre squeal

Cheers.
btw, I meant about 1mm (maybe 2mm) over the minimum 3mm tread depth!
There is a big of cracking happening on the shoulders of the rears already actually. Less than 1mm deep and mostly due to wheel-spin when mucking about. There is no way they will last.
This is through Trackday.co.uk but there is a place called DC tyres that have a selection that will fit my simple wheels and they're in Donnington Castle village itself.

pssst. Unless the law has changed it's a minimum of 1.6 mm legally.btw, I meant about 1mm (maybe 2mm) over the minimum 3mm tread depth!

I have run these tyres before.... on a shopping car.. but they wont be up much on the track for sure.. the side walls are not reinforeced.. and they are pretty hard compound.. but pump them up, chalk the sidewalls so you know what your footprint is like, and see how you get on..
Just dont expect too much frm them..
but have some fun..!
