MR2 TRACK CAR advice
Discussion
Hi i have a MK2 MR2 2.0 16v that is standard and wanted to know what to do to and how much to make into a track weapon?
Has anyone done this yet?
We are willing to strip out as much as neccesary, we are on a bit of a shoe string budget so be kind people.
Any advice welcome
Cheers

As Jonny said - Brakes.
Standard discs from Brakes International, but use nothing less than EBC Yellow Stuff or if budget is not a problem - Carbotech. Pagid Race pads are good too. Don't bother with Ferodo DS2500 - you'll cook them in no time.
Motul 5.1 fluid and braided hoses.
Tein Coilovers would help a bit with the handling and get the geo set up properly.
Have a word with the guys over at Rogue Motorsport (google) - they are heavily involved with MKII MR2 racing. Top bunch of guys with a hoard of valuble info

I race a Mk2 MR2 in the 750 mc MR2 challenge, our cars spec is fairly standard but they can be made to handle quite well.
I'd say in order of priority;
get some good tyres like Ao48's or 888's
get 4 point harnesses fitted
uprated pads/fluid (the standard brakes cope quite well)
lower springs (eg Tein)
better shocks - eg set of Bilsteins of a turbo model
uprated adjustable fr/rear anti roll bars from White line make a big difference

Brakes brakes brakes brakes brakes and brakes!
Seriously - I ran one for about 6 months a few years ago and was spending more on brakes than I was on fuel & tyres combined!

Old small brake car or more recent big brake car? I've heard the little brakes are rubbish but the bigger brake cars i've always had are fine on track, brakes are the best thing about them infact. The MR2 championship cars do fine with just uprated pads.Seriously - I ran one for about 6 months a few years ago and was spending more on brakes than I was on fuel & tyres combined!

Personally i'd strip it bare, you should get a tin top n/a down to ~1000kg if your brutal, seats & harnesses, track pads, either lower suspension or stiffer ARB's, camber bolts and a track alignment, job done. Forget about getting more power you won't.

theres not that much weight you can take out easily.
our race cars run to a limit of somthing like 1050kg and the cars that have everything you can think of taken out are still close to that limit and only need a small bit of balast to keep them within the limit.
and yes the brakes are very good on them
