Seen the odd Golf TDi and BMW 120d on track. I imagine the lack of rev range may be frustrating if you were used to a petrol but overall should be quick enough to not get in the way.

I would think a 330 D would be good fun on the track, some tracks better then other .

Ive taken my 335d on track plenty. Its superb. The only mod is a re-map. It has sport suspension as standard and handles very well.

I even had some fun with my mate in his tuned e46 m3, his mods include pulleys, re-map, exhaust, filter 100cell cats, coilvers and AP brakes.

I then passed him before the next bend.

Obviosuly on track the driver plays a big part. But never the less a BMW is a BMW. Your car will handle as well as a petrol varient. It wont understeer like people will tell you.

I enjoy my car on track, it does not feel breathless at all even with only 5k revs. She pulls hard out of the bends and the torque provides relentless acceleration on track.

Even enjoyed some fun at the Nordeshleife.

It will be plenty fast enough. You won't be getting the aural excitement you'd get in a petrol car, but at least you won't have any problems with the noise test...

One of the guys on our 'ring trip brought an E46 330d, and had a great time.

IMHO it'll never be as suited as a petrol, due to the power-delivery / torque curve acting against it on track (vs for it on-road), but it's a quick car with a good chassis!

I shall be track driving my current car when she's old enough to need replacing.
A diesel Leon Cupra Mk1 currently chipped to 190bhp.
It won't be slow at all on track. Track driving is generally in the range 60-110 mph where such a car has plenty of urge.

75 decibels for a 335d.
