I want a second car for weekend/track day use and have a short list of 2 cars, or more accuratelly, 2 plans:
mk1 mx5- pick one up for £1500. Can use as weekend car and for trackdays (thinking just new pads and tyres) . I can see the value in summer motoring with the top down- but, how many days do we really get, and once i have taken care of wife, kids and the jobs that they line up for me i can see it only being about 5-10 days a year plus say 5 track days.
golf mk2- looking at 1.8 (not gti) with weber. Could get for about £350, strip it and spend a grand on coilovers, tyres, and a couple of other mods whilst also refurbing parts as i go.
So, what plan makes the best use of my £1500-£2000 in terms of creating a track day car and, letting the heart rule, what would you do, 1 or 2. Vote now! (perhaps 3 should be neither..)
thanks
In the spirit of voting for what you've got - MX5
.
They make good track cars and you can pretty much go on the track straight away (well, after a good service). Tyres and pads are a good idea, but not absolutely necessary. Of course if you end up with one that has tired dampers etc, you can spend as much as you'd want
.
The beauty of the MX5 is that you can have a trackable car that's still usable on the road. Both my previous MX5 and the current one are "dual use" in that sense. Not sure if you can get that with the Golf.
