Want to buy tow 2 cars to trackdays - any suggestions?
Discussion
need to be able to tow 2 cars to UK/Euro trackdays under cover, thinking of Caterham and Ford GT cars. was hoping to pick up ex-race team gear at a reasonable price but haven't seen anything yet. any tips on where best to find this stuff??
appreciate I could get a double trailer made new but quotes currently coming in at approx. GBP15k.
any pointers greatly appreciated.

The only problem with running a 7.5T truck to move two cars is that the payload is very limited. It's a good idea but not really practical in my experience. When you add in the awning, workshop equipment, spares etc, you will find that you are very close to the maximum gvw.
A good friend bought a Eurocargo and converted it specifically to carry two cars. Everything was done with weight saving in mind but it was almost impossible to keep below the weight limit. Don't forget the woeight of a tank of diesel etc has to be included. He used it to carry two relatively light sports cars.
He sold the car after one season and has reverted to towing two trailers.

so whats wrong with driving the lorry with one car on board, plus tools etc, and towing the second car behind. although this will incur you needing a class 1 licence as a 7.5 tonne with trailer is the same class as an articulated vehicle licence.A good friend bought a Eurocargo and converted it specifically to carry two cars. many thanks for the steer. I was inclined to try to get a double trailer, towed by a road car and not a lorry if possible as its another vehicle to tax/insure/service etc. just hard to get something that'll take a ford gt and a 7 at the same time.
Sorry mate, but I don't think you will ever, legally, get a road car to pull a double trailer.£15k!!! madness, You can get a double trailer for circa £5k + vat area new, made by the best, either hydraulic lift if its a light car on the top- 750kg or under, or a long 2 car trailer. Both can be towed by a car- well as long as that car is a 4x4 that is & it doesnt have a daftly low towing weight- stand up Mr Volvo XC90 etc, would need proper 3.5t towing weight.
Both have advantages & disadvantages, a 2 car long is bloody long & yet due to law its quite restrictive on the length of the bed- 7m max & thus cars & also restrictive on the weight you can carry & costs a lot on ferrys etc, athough daftly despite size not as much ££ as a 7.5t truck at half the length.
See PRG & Brian James websites for both.

I use 3.5t & a cross load trailer, works best for me, you do have to examine the train weights of prospective 3.5t trucks tho, some = 5.5t train with is quite restrictive, ideally you want 6t & above.
If trailer behind 4x4 or 3.5t van towing & its not your own vehices you will need a tacho tho, buying fitting & calibrating is not cheap & even if it is your own & you race rather then trackday the VOSA can still clober you for hire & reward- the reward part being race winnings, daft I know even stock car rarers winnings circa £50! but I know folks who have been done.
Alternatively of course as many do- just book me for the transports

ps- see Pistonheads classifieds, motorsport, trucks for sale, a few to suit, a Ford GT wont go on the converted tail lifts of many converted regular trucks they are 1000kg normally, need conventional ramps or a heavy duty tail lift.
Recoveryworld.com is also good for used transporters, as well as ebay of course
