Im planning a trip to the ring in the summer and although 4 of us will be driving via SPA and some mountain passes a couple of friends are looking at flying and hiring a car and then coming home with us.

What is the closest airport to the ring?
and is there a decent train service from the airport to within say 1/2 hour drive of the ring?

Thanks in advance.

Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) is 50mi away, not to be confused with Frankfurt Main (FRA) which is close to the city and 100mi away.

Cheapo carriers like Ryan fly into Hahn so you might get some really cheap flights.

Public transport doesn't work well for getting to the ring as service into the Eifel region is just too thin. Most people rent something really cheap like a Smart and use that to shuttle.
Don't be tempted to drive the hire car around the ring though, the rental co's have caught on and taken to issuing big fines.

/edit, ah, if you're in the area with a car you might as well just go collect them from HHN

When I go I use air miles to take BA into Frankfurt main (FRA) and book whatever is cheapest to hire at the time to drive up to the ring (and hire a proper track car when there). Where you fly to is frankly more a matter of what is the cheapest flight on offer to you, but nothing is going to be an overly taxing drive. Check for cheap flights on special with Lufthansa too - had a bargain on the return the time BA cancelled the return flight I was planning to take.

Don't know about trains I am afraid, but 3 days (normal) car hire at below a hundred quid isn't bad for the extra flexibility (I go with a mate and we split it)...

Cheers for the replies, give him a couple of options.

Think he's found flights to Frankfurt-Hahn for under £30 so it looks like we'll have to pick him up from there.
