So if the price is of no real concern or longevity..... Just outright performance.

What is the best rack tyre that you can also use on the road? I don't care about its on road performance as long as it is legal...

Depends on the car, weight, setup - Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, Toyo R888, Yoko A048, Avon ACB10 are all very good depending on what car you're fitting them to....

I'd say Dunlop DZ03G.

Out of unrest why would the car make a difference? I can see different weights of vehicle effecting the compound you would go for but outright grip on a dry surface will not be changed by set up, weight, power or any other variable?

Tried various on my evo over the years...

Yoko a048r
Toyo r888
hankook
Dunlop dz03

The dunlops are by far the best for performance/grip for a road legal track tyre

Switched to tarmac rally tyres now for trackdays (kumho c03/Pirelli rs7 etc....different league again)

With any tyre getting best grip from it is pretty much all about getting it to its optimal temperature range - all of those factors will affect it, as will the surface, driving style, weather and any other number of factors.

Then add in contact patch and sidewall stiffness (and general construction) - some tyres will respond well to lots of negative camber, some won't, so the same tyre which was good and responsive with one car and the way its suspension works may not be so good for another as it either doesn't get the tyre up to temperature evenly across the tread, or alters the contact patch etc etc.....so while some generalisation can take place when you get to something like a R888 v A048 then it will very much be down to the car and setup as to which one is better. Look at F1 just now - some cars just "work" with the tyres a lot better than others.

Linglong
...even better than MPSC, surprisingly.

Seriously though, Dunlop DZ03G, imo.

Seriously though, Linglongs

had these on my XJr 300 and done a sessioned day at Goodwood with the intention of wasting them, i tried everything i could to wear them out to no avail. Grip was superb and the breakaway was so controllable. 2 years later and there still on the car! Crap in the wet though

I rate the Kumho V70's great in the dry and do not overheat.

They are hard to get heat into in the wet though and so are hard to get any grip out of them in very wet conditions.

How do the DZ03G compare to the Dunlop Sport Maxx Race?

I have a set of the latter but have yet to fit them because summer here is too hot for track days.

Unless it rains. They are the worst `R` tyre I`ve ever driven on in the wet.

Brilliant in the dry though.

If wet weather isnt a concern I couldn't recommend Nitto NT05's highly enough, they are more or less half the price of Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they grip as well.

Mine are about 90% worn now and although they go off at the end of their life, when they are less then 50% worn even my Z06 couldn't break traction in 2nd! They just hook up and go!

In a back to back test with cups the dz03g was a second a lap faster on hockenheim short circuit on the same day with the same driver on a modified e92 m3.The cup is a road tyre with a soft tread and is a great tyre but the dunlop is a race carcase and is a lot lighter and gives better feedback. The wear rate of both tyres is very similar and the dunlops are a bit cheaper too.

I’ve heard (not experienced so this is anecdotal) that the Dunlops can struggle with heavier cars, I believe the sidewall isn’t quite as stiff as similar R888, Silverstone etc semi slicks, eg work great on a say a seven type or stockhatch, less so with a big saloon, only what I’d heard around the paddock, for my money I’d go for the Federal Z-201 I have first hnd knowledge of these and they are on a par with all the above and wear well to, I can get a season out of one set compared to R888s which would need replacing mid season.

I know of a number of Evo's in Time Attack that use Dunlops to great success so not sure that weight is an issue.

Not known in UK but they are a fantastic tyre. Made by Toyo i think. Got some from US for my past Mustang and they were a dream. I thought they were Very good on wet too.

Have used 888's and A048's on my Evo's previously, and have just tried DZ03's for a trackday at Spa. They were excellent - more grip than either, just as stiff so great steering response, didn't overheat like the 888's and still have loads of life left in them - definitely recommended.
