Should I go for this 'keeper'?

I have had an itch that needs scratching since I sold my mx5 a few years ago. My daily car is white goods to do my 80 mile round commute but I want a car to take an interest in. A long term project. It would be used for a weekend car and the odd track day. I would hope to upgrade it over the next 5 years say, and perhaps look to do dome auto solos, road rallies or sprints.
My friend in work has a 1.7 puma that is going to fail its mot next month. It has rust on arches and sills, calliper needs replacing and a lowers suspension arm. I have been offered it for free though. Clearly it isn't perfect, but I know what's wrong at least, and it is free!
I'm hoping that I can get the sills welded up for about £200? Rough job would be fine and I would consider sanding and rattle canning myself. A brake upgrade seems recommended for use on track, so the dodgy calliper isn't a problem. I haven't driven it yet, but it seems pumas are great fun. Surely I shouldn't turn down a free car because of the rust, should I?

They are great to drive, I was very surprised by how much fun the Puma was when I first drove one.
Welding should be cheap if not serious as is the replacement wishbone.
Cambelt on these is quite tricky to do one these and I think it's 60k/ 6 years definitely not the 100k / 10 years That ford quoted in the original service book.
Best upgrade on these is to fit a recarro as per the millennium model, the standard Puma seats are far too high up compared to the millennium (and the racing puma with its sparco seats)

Yeh why not, seen a few on track and a friend tracks his as well. Plenty of cheap parts for upgrades available. If you have any scabby rust marks, just smooth them off as best you can and find some vinyl graphics to cover the eyesores.Forums | Track Days | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
