888's Next best thing to slicks. But watch out in the wet esp when 50%+ worn.

I'm using Achilles 123, because they cost less than a mid-range road tyre and have plenty of grip for me. Sure you might pick up a couple of seconds a lap using more expensive rubber, but thats pretty irrelevant as trackdays aren't about timing anyway.

R888s seem popular with trackday crowd but racers I've talked to about tyres don't consider them on the same level as the Bridgestone or Dunlop options.

Interesting subject, its about time the winter tyres came off the 964 and the track tyres go on, have preferred Pilot Cup Sports in the past, but this year they are bringing out the Pilot Super Sport will be interesting to see feedback from any early adopters in the trackday field. type

R888's especially now prices have dropped again.

An A048 and Michelin cup is actually slightly better in dry but the R888 is also really good in the wet in my experience.

They don't like huge amounts of standing water when worn though... but I have never aqauplanned and have done thousands of miles on them.

I have run them on all my cars and still do. On my big fat lumps of lard like 996Turbo and Skyline R34GTR to little lightweights like Westfields, Lotus Exige and Clio cup. Work well on road and track on all. Bloody noisy on the bigger cars though on the road!

I have also used Pirelli corsa, all the Dunlops from DJ01, the 2's and the direzza 03's.

Not tried any Khumo ecstas or Hankooks. Overall for cost and all weather grip and road/track use. I like the R888's

I to have used 888,s on my R32 gtr and find them excellant in the dry and ok in the rain on track as long as no deep puddles.Ive had good use out of my current set and they have lasted well.Because of the price of a new set i have gone for federal 595 RSR,s which worked out half the price of 888,s.Im hopeing to fit them soon so i.ll post how they are soon.

I have had good feedback on the Federal RS-R. Also look at the Silverstone FTZ RR that came out top in an independant test.

Interesting comments...

R888's I know are very popular, but popular doesn't always mean the best...

I have read R888's can be very noisy on larger/heavier cars and have to say that does put me off a bit.
I plan on doing about 5-6 track days this year but do use the car every weekend and often drive it on the motorway. All told I do about 10k per annum which is mostly road driving so don't want a very noisy or fast wearing tyre.

Lack of availibilty/suppliers of other brands seems to be an issue too, perhaps that's why R888's are so popular!

Has anyone moved from R888's to something else that they prefer and find better? What is better?

Just put a set of Federal 595's on my 120D today - I know they are not the track tyre, am not familiar with the brand so will see how I get on with the 595 which they claim is a performance tyre...

Fairly limited fitment, but the new Avon ZZR is superb on the Caterham.

Have been using Hankook RS2's for the past year on my track car. Unfortunately it is my frst taste of a track tyre so cant really compare to anything.
Overall grip has been great in the dry and on a very wet day at Mallory.

Was a bit slippy on Rockingham but from what I hear that is just a slippy track when wet and cold.

Brother has just put on Advan AD08's on his 32 GTS and will be waiting to see how they fair as they are only slightly more than the Hankooks.

I've been Reading about 888's alot which seem rather decent.

Interested to hear if anyone has run the Toyo R1R's ?

I'm currently running T1R's on the Elise but have just purchased some new wheels and a set of 888's so I'll have a comparison in a couple of weeks.

Did a track day on the T1R's and they seemed good so will be interesting to see if the 888's are noticeably different (doubt it with my limited driving ability!)

I ran 888's on my ZS track car and they were awesome. The level of grip they gave was astonishing and out of the 15 cars on track, you could tell the three of us who had 888's on the cars, we were so much faster. I fondly remember chasing down a Focus ST running approx 300bhp driven by an ex rally driver in my ZS which only had 200bhp... big difference being the tyres, I could just get on the power so much sooner and hold tighter lines where I needed to smile

Ive run R888s on my 200 BHP Caterham on the road for a few years now, very good grip the dry, crap in the wet. On track used to destroy nearside front on a clockwise track within a few sessions. Not even close to the grip of slicks though...
