In a predicament, hoping for some wise advice
Discussion
Hi all,
I am barreling into late 20s, previously very uneducated but I have been working on this the last few years and I am currently half way through an Accounting degree - it is part time so it taking 4 years. I am in the heart of Surrey so getting bent over on every bill that exists.
In the meantime, I have been on minimum wage since I was 16. I do 42.5 hours currently and it is just not enough. I have found it very difficult to find a second job as the opportunities are just not there.
I ideally need to get some proper money flowing in. Debating hitting the bottom of the barrel and delivering for Amazon as a contractor at £170 per day for 5 days and chopping the current job in - however I really do not want to do this.
I need to clear about £34k. Does anyone have an idea on a low barrier to entry to achieve this without selling my soul?
Some other options are to leave my 8-5 (Warehouse) for an earlier one to facilitate a 5-11
I also signed up for Amazon flex as that would be ideal but I m on the waitlist so.
Bit lost, I m really locked down with this studying but without it I will never get out. Watching the bills stack and the income doesnt move.

My lad was going to work as a delivery driver for Yodel or one of those sorts, the contract was shocking. Basically they could tell you when and where to work and you had to expenses everything.
It’s hard at the moment, I work in construction and it’s really slow on the jobs side. Good luck with whatever you do and well done for wanting to better yourself.

Firstly, well done on taking on the education and improving yourself.
Sounds like you've got a couple of years left in this situation so there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Anything you can remove from your spend / bills? Off the top of my head examples: Cancel the Sky package or remove any consumer finance (Like a car loan for example).
Next is to maximize your earning and learning time.
What does your average day look like? How do you split study time from working time? Any way to be flexible to do some gig work on the side like Uber eats driving or something?
I don't know the field you are wanting to enter (But presumably a finance department somewhere?) Are there any entry level roles you could approach folks on with your story to see if they'll give you a shot earlier than passing your degree?

Thank you for the kind words. It has been quite the journey and as it turns out, rather tough later in life. Life lesson you can hand your kids! Sounds like you've got a couple of years left in this situation so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Besides a car loan (£9k total, £5k left) The only thing I have outside a genuine expense is Netflix, and even that is the one with ads! I will happily bin the car but I will need to change the job first as it is not accessible by the poverty bus.
Work 8-5 Monday to Friday, studying in London 6-9 3 evenings a week, fitting in home study where I can. Nothing on the weekend. Have been actively looking for weekend work and open to using the other two evenings in the week too but the area is really struggling for work at the moment and part time rarely comes up.
End goal is accountant, so I have the professional quals to do yet before the situation really improves, but I have already started so hopefully can get a head start.
I have applied to the accounts assistant stuff etc etc but they appear very competitive as I havent made it pass interview yet - plus the pay for them sucks so I have to cherry pick at the moment.
Depending on your skills might be worth looking at temp. agencies. I packed in my job in July and have been doing agency work (cheffing) since and there is more work than I want. Just been booked for stuff in November.
The agency I am with (the blue pointy one) cover all sorts of roles and weekend work pays a premium.
If you can do the job no one cares about qualifications.

Your circumstances seem to have changed quickly. only a couple of months ago you gave this advice on house ownership and your seemingly significant investments....
"
, I sold mine last year.
I can make more out of other investment options, I like to move about, I like to not have to deal with maintenance and I’m rich enough the minor difference between rent and mortgage is negligible."
surprised you didn't pay off your car loan with your investment cash?

Yes that is called talking nonsense and cope lies - pretty common on forums. Appreciate the FBI background check though. "

Home delivery driver for Tesco etc. is around 30k p.a, give or take a bit of overtime, and you can do shifts to leave part of the day free for studying, or other work.
I looked at Ocado the other day but It appeared they rotate the shifts so it wasn’t a good fit for me, will have a look at the others. Thanks
4 years for a part time accountancy degree that‘s going to get you some exemptions in the middle tier of a professional accountancy qualification, but leave you with more exams to do and no three year experience log to go with finally passing the exams to get your charter.
If you had the qualifications to get onto a degree course, why didn‘t you go straight into ACCA/CIMA training (or even start with AAT if not qualified for the others)?

health issues, not so much if you are a grounded human being. You have lost all credibility regarding having an adult conversation now, bye

Yeah, not great form so the likelihood of anyone taking you seriously is inhibited to the point of being completely untenable.health issues, not so much if you are a grounded human being. You have lost all credibility regarding having an adult conversation now, bye
Giving the benefit of the doubt. If you're halfway through the accountancy qualification, you should reach out to businesses to be an assistant on an accounting team. You'll be able to apply what you're learning and will earn experience in tandem making you more employable once your qualification is complete.
It will be a better use of your time vs. holding down a second job. Your income requirement is reasonable (although appreciate this is location dependent)

TBH mate, it was just two mouse clicks. one click on your profile and a second click choosing one of your many threads and replies. I know the FBI aren't held in high regard these days but I suspect they set the bar a bit higher than two mouse clicks when investigating anything. I have to say I was quite impressed by your original post in this thread. so impressed that it left me thinking I had had quite a few lucky breaks in life so I was going to offer to pay off your car loanvia a PM to help you on your way.
but then I read so much BS in your thread history in 5 minutes that it was impossible to take you seriously.
good luck though if you really are committed to improving your circumstances.
if indeed your circumstances are as set out in this thread

Yet in another thread to day you write that you are earning 34k a year at Amazon, so are already clearing the amount you say you need and were earning more than minimum wage in other roles. Ahh yes. My people.
I was born into it + into care at 14 which was even worse.
Not very academic.
Worked pubs from 16, manager at 23. Pre covid so the money was still s
t (£26k I think). No family unit or help available.
Covid hit. Lost the job. Went to Amazon warehouse where I ve been ever since. On about £34k now.
Rent for a 1 bed is £1400. Nowhere cheaper in the area, cannot do shared again for MH reasons.
Think there is £10k in my pension, £48 in savings and maybe £700 in my bank account.
Cannot get ahead, never could get ahead. Do not have the mental capacity to uproot and move. Do not have the mental capacity to care anymore.
I am studying now towards accounting certs but AI will probably have my job 5-10 years into that job.
Mostly given up tbh.
