Hi,

If someone’s contract specifies their place of work is home, their role is across a whole business that has multiple locations, can they claim expenses for overnight stays in all locations?

TIA

What is company policy on these things? It should be laid out in the staff handbook or similar. I know when I was employed, there were specific reasons when I could claim and how much I could claim for. One was an overnight allowance for incidentals

It would seem reasonable so long as the overnight stay is justifiable and within the expense policy.

To address both points i am looking at this more from a HRMC perspective than company, I could effectively re write policy to suit.

I'm sure HMRC will have guidance if this is about what you can and cannot claim tax relief on as business.

IIRC there are certain exemptions available as to whether tax has to be paid on the overnight costs repaid to the employee by the business. It all comes down to the purpose of the trip.

I know that when we had an overnight stay for a company bash, there was always a “sales meeting” preceding it so that the costs were tax deductible. The payment back to us would be reimbursed but to be tax exempt, there had to be a business reason.

Maybe check with an accountant to get the correct advice

I'm not sure what you mean by "expenses for overnight stays"

Meal allowances when travelling on work purposes - YES (within limits)
Accommodation costs - YES
Travel to and from overnight site - YES

Well, HMRC allows you to claim up to £5 per night for 'un-receipted personal expenditure'. Not sure what you'd get for a fiver though! smile
