Family friendly working hours

Anybody any experience of how this can be arranged??
I work 8hr shifts starting between 8-12,5 days out of 7.I'm a single father,i look after my kid from from firday afternoon when he finishes school until sunday evening and have been struggling with babysitters, getting him picked up and dropped off etc if I am working. It has got to the stage where I am paying more for babysitters and taxis for her than I earn if i go to work.
I have spoken to my direct manager who helps me as much as he can but this is not on the records and if he was found out would be reprimanded so cannot go on forever.
I have spoke to HR and the business operations manager but they say too busy and cannot help with changing shift patterns etc
However I know that some mothers have had shifts rearranged to help them. for example, one girl who now works constant 8-4.
Any help or advice appreciated
ETA, the reason I am now posting for advice is they have asked me to start including working 1-9pm shifts so the situation is only going to get worse

I'd go back to HR with specific examples of the mothers who have been given constant 8-4 shifts and request you be given the same. Muttering about sexual discrimination could then be held in reserve...
Of course, this assumes you are doing a job that can be just as productive on a 8-4 shift rather than the moving shifts you have now.

How old is your daughter? If she's under 6, then you have additional rights when it comes to requesting flexible working conditions.
Basically, the onus is on the employer to reasonably demonstrate why you can't do your job as you are requesting, not on you to show that you can. If they have definitely made accommodation for other employees, then this should obviously help.
Obviously, you do need to make sure you keep your demands reasonable. Whilst it might be reasonable for a supermarket shelf stacker to say they can't start work before 10 as they have to take their kids to school, it wouldn't be reasonable for them to ask to work from home for obvious reasons.
