Right

Basically in my job area we have 3 levels. I was taken on at the lowest level, with the possibility of being trained so I could move into levels 2 and 3.

18 months later I have had some training.. but I am not quite up to level 2 yet in terms of experience.

Now a level 2 job has opened up, and they dont come up too often.

My manager has basically said don't feel afriad of applying but you will obviously have to beat other people applying.. and quite often we get a lot of good/experienced applicants. My manager doesn't make the decision either, his manager does.

So I am probably going to apply but there is a high chance I won't get it. Its a shame because I feel in 6 months time it would have been an ideal time to apply for a job like this. Due to the nature of the industry these jobs are not too common (in the grand scheme of things).

On the plus side I feel I am a liked member of the team yadda yadda

Question is has anyone gone for a promotion and failed? What did you feel? Annoyed? What about when another promotion comes up? Did you feel reluctant?

Treat it as a learning curve, nothing ventured noting gained, even if you are unsuccesful you would have gained valuable interview experience & feedback so you'll be better prepared interview wise for when a position comes up in the future.

Perfect summation. I just applied for a new position (semi promotion). Didn't get it, as I figured I might not if another better candidate applied too (and he did), but it was excellent experience and exposure. A 4 panel interview, with all directors, so I got the chance to show my best side and tell them a little about my past which they might never of known otherwise.

Feedback from my boss was excellent too (both positive and some negative) and he said it has only done me good.

Remember it also gives you a little phsycological advantage for the next time a job comes up, as they will remember that they had to say no to you last time, so may feel that they owe you a little more this time...

Go for it. Nothing to lose.

Applying for a promotion also shows that you're interested and hungry to progress. As others have said, it gives you an opportunity to sit in front of people in your organisation who may not normally be interested or minded to sit and listen to what you have to say.

Go for it!

If you do get it, well done you, and you're on the promotion ladder faster than you expected.

If you don't, then make sure you get maximum feedback on what you need to do to make sure you get the next one.

Many years ago I was working in tech support for a large software company. I was a 2nd line engineer, covering a 3rd line role.

After a year covering the role with no complaints and glowing reviews, 3 proper jobs appeared at that level. 5 of us applied, a new manager was chosen to carry out the interview process. He decided he didn't like me - I didn't get the job.

I quit within a month.

Incidentally - the company Mrs Puggit worked for was then bought by the company I used to work for. She now reports to that very same manager - who is as nice as pie.

both managers know me well and know my career aims (after all they have paid for my training etc) - its more a question of whether i can step up and do the job they want when they can get someone new in.

they also know that they kind of have me by the balls if i dont get it because i would almost 100% certainly stay on in my current job for a while.

job will be advertised soon, so i will play it cool!

The flipside of that is that whilst they might be able to get someone else in from outside who knows parts of the job better, you have an advantage in already knowing the company and how it works.

Also, don't ignore the value to the management of the fact that you're a known quantity. Sure, your management might be able to get someone with more experience in, but they can't actually know that they'll fit in with the team and everything else.

Lastly, you're an internal candidate, so you'd save them a bundle on recruitment fees! hehe

Of course, the above stuff only applies if you're the only internal candidate.

To the OP I would say go for it, what have you got to lose?

What I would add to this though; is that if they don't offer you the job it is how you react to this that really counts for a lot in my opinion and where you can really make a name for yourself in your managers eyes.
I have certainly turned down internal applicants before who were nearly ready for the step up, but not quite and then closely watched how they manage that rejection. Those that bounce straight back, ask for in depth feedback, look to improve their skillset based on the feedback and remain focused on their current role are the ones that I look to progress forward as a priority when further vacant jobs come available.

I have always felt that the setbacks in my career have generated the best opportunities to improve my learning and raise my profile.

First reply hit the nail on the head. Even if you don't get it, then the feedback you get from the process will tell you what you need to do to get to that level.

Whilst you may not have the experience in terms of time, if you're up against folk external to the organisation then bang on about having contacts, knowledge of the organisation and processes and being able to get into the role quickly.

Can be a big deal, as you don't want to parachute some guru in that doesn't have a clue how the org works.

One more tip. Don't say 'deffo' at the interview.

Well done! Blimey, it's not exactly a fast moving organisation is it?

Didn't see your original post, but my missus applied for promotion 6 weeks after starting her current job. Basically just different levels of an admin job but still many others thought she was being cheeky, but she got it.

Public services for you. The interview was a couple of weeks ago but the job was advertised for ages!

Same for my missus - Civil Service. Their's was internal only though - in the department she's in now they only ever take people at the lowest level and then promote.
