"No compensation for travelling time"- Legal?
Discussion
Off the bat just let me say that I'm very grateful to be employed at the moment and don't object to having to put in a few more hours in at my own expense...
However, in the next couple of weeks I'm being sent to work in Glasgow. This adds an extra 5 hours travel to 3 days out of the week for a couple of months.
This additional 15 hours travel a week (taking me up to 50+ hours) is entirely unpaid with no time in lieu, as per my (horrible) contract.
Is this all above board? Is there no statutory overtime if you travel more than a certain distance?

Not unless you are paid by the hour or have overtime defined in the contract.
We expect employees to attend meetings here and overseas - this might well involve Sunday travel or very early starts. Their are compensated for this via salary and bonuses. We will, at our discretion, allow a day off in lieu but it is not a contracted obligation on our part.
There are few worse employees for us to have than those who stick absolutely to a 9-5:30 + 1 hour regime no matter what the business demands; especially in a sales role.

Sounds totally normal to me. If I have to get up at 04:00 to get the 1st flight out and get the last flight back at 22:00. Thats just part of doing the job. I'd complain if they wanted me to work all those hours. But travelling time just happens.
It's not unusual for me to be driving by 06:00 to somewhere for a 2 hour meeting, and not return home untill pushing 20:00.

Ahh well fair enough. It was more curiosity than anything else.
As I said I have no problem with putting the time in and I hope I've not come across any other way. There was talk of redundancy some months ago so I'm just glad to be of use to be honest!
Also turns out it's now only three weeks, I get £8 for lunch and I might even be able to get them to pay for me 40p/mile to take the Jag. All at the expense of the NHS!
Finally all my years of paying national insurance are paying off..

40p a mile for the 1st 10,000 miles then 25p a mile thereafter in one tax year is the limit before it becomes taxible. At 50-60mpg in the Vectra....well lifes not so bad at 20,000-30,000 miles a year.As I said I have no problem with putting the time in and I hope I've not come across any other way. Screw that man I travel in style and get 22mpg in my XJR.
If I did more than a few thousand miles a year I would probably consider an oil burner though... Maybe.
