A question if I may...
Discussion
Afternoon all,
I'm after a bit of advice. I'm currently 2 years out of uni (civil engineering) and have been working for the one company since then (first year I was seconded, this year I've been in direct employment - they're a large contractor), and I'm not all that happy in the position I'm in at the moment (for a whole host of reasons). So I've been looking around a bit and realised I've got few possible directions.
1) Stay where I am.
Benefits of this being that I stay within the same company, I continue working towards chartership (is it really worth anything though?). Downside being that it's rubbish experience, and pretty boring. It's also not really in the industry I want to be in (Rail).
2) Move back to where I was seconded to.
This would be under a much plusher contract, and I'd be working less hours for more money, and with greater responsibilty day to day. Downside being is there is much chance to move around, it's entirely london based, and I'm not certain about the chartership prospects. It's also still in the rail industry, which I'm afraid I might get tied into.
3) Swap out for a design year.
An option could be to swap for a year with a design company as part of my training agreement. This would allow me to stick with the same contract as I'm on at the moment, count big towards chartership and is possibly in the industry I want to move into (marine & coastal). Downside is I'd probably have to take a bit of a pay-cut due to losing various benefits & bonuses etc, and it may be fairly hard to sort out at the moment given the economy.
4) Sell out and go into the oil & gas industry.
Not given it too much thought, but I imagine there's money to be made and lots to choose from.
My initial thought after typing this out is to research a bit more into option 3, and see if it's likely to be feasible.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as obviously such a decision could have a fair impact in years to come.
Thanks,
Chris
