Can I resign without giving my notice period?

I have to give 4 weeks notice at work, but I want to resign with immediate effect. HR say I can, but I don't trust the woman who told me. Anyone on here know?

You are required to give four weeks notice, and to work it if they insist.

If they agree to something else in writing then fine (i.e. if they agree you can go straight away then fine).

You may be able to leave if you dont want to be paid, have a good reference etc. although i dont know if they could sue you over leaving without notice.
