I had a 3 month notice period and handed in my notice a while ago. As of 18th December, I am out of work.

So, apart from apply for new jobs - which I obviously am ...

What do I need to do next? Do I need to tell anyone offically?

I guess I'm not entitled to anything from the government, but what about my NI payments and stuff?

You'd be surprised. You should be entitled to JSA, Housing Benefit(pays a proportion of your rent/council tax) or mortgage interest relief.

That is unless you have savings of over £16k.

ETA: You can only apply for JSA once your employment ends, but you can apply for Housing Benefit before the event and have it kick in on your leaving date.

Phone the job centre immediatly (first day of unemployment). For starters they'll pay your national insurance contribution while you're out of work, meaning you won't have a gap in your payments that will reduce your state pension. If you've been in work and paying NI for the last 2 years you'll be entitled to the contribution based job seekers allowance, which is about £65/week. If you've got less than £16k in the bank and don't have a partner in work then you'll be entitled to more than that.

If you've got more then 16k in the bank, try and 'get rid' of some to take it below 16k, otherwise you get nothing.
