We I'd like to stick with finance, but not having much luck. So I've been applying else where (retail, general office work, council), but the response I tend to get is: 'sorry we'd like to employ you, but as soon as the market picks up you'd be looking for employment else where'. I'm at a bit of a loose end now, and I've spent all my savings now, just got redundancy cash left.

Personally I think you need to decide on what field you want to enter next and adjust your resume accordingly. As an example if I was a prospective employer in the financial sector I would be wondering why there was a gap in your resume where you were working in retail. Likewise if I was a prospective employer in the retail sector I would be wondering what you could offer as most of your experience seems to be in finance.
Decide what you want to do and commit to it 100%, modify (see the way I used modify and not lie here) your resume to give you the best possible chance and hopefully things will work out.
If your unsure on here what you want to do next then it probably comes across in any interview you may conduct also, hence employers not feeling your excitment / entusiasm for their company. This is why you need to decide and commit.
