All advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated
Some background:
I am a trained Architect (27) with little to no prospect of Architectural employment given the current financial climate, in reality (and it’s a bitter pill to swallow) I need to consider alternative careers.
I have been working independently for the last 18 months, previous to that I was in full time employment between degrees for a similar period. I have increasingly finding myself managing small/medium construction projects (principally domestic) from conception to practical completion. I really enjoy coordinating the various aspects of a project and I find myself increasingly drawn away from a design role.
I have time on my hands and a relatively clear work book.
Can anyone suggest any literature, courses or qualifications (PRINCE 2 etc…) that would help in my pursuit of a career as a PM?
I’d be interested to hear how you got involved, any advice or feedback?

In my experience, big employers like to use the PM "methodologies" as filtering for job applicants, but it's experience that really matters. I've got a PRINCE2 qualification and have never, ever needed to use it despite working at sites that claimed to require it.
OF course, getting the experience can be the difficult bit.

Thanks for the feedback gents, a PRINCE2 course is probably my next step although at £1k it makes me wince. It would be a small price to pay if it helped.
I've recently passed an assessment centre for a Public sector PM role (which required 3 years of nonspecific experience)and I am awaiting interview, unfortunately it seems the jobs may not exist anymore given cuts. Fingers crossed.
