Anyone work in advertising?
Discussion
Just really wanted to see if there was anyone on here that works in advertising, print/online any other sector really that had any insight into the industry and where they see it going..
I am interested to know if there is a certain area of the advertising (I'm in print sales at this moment) where the money is gernally higher, or that is going to be or is in huge demand, what kind of things are going to be getting more and more popular as time goes on, like the increase in online and death of print etc.
I work for a large publishing place at the minute, and there is the option overtime to go in pretty much whatever direction, and would be good to know if its worth going down a certain route that could be more lucrative than the usual, or something that I don't know already...

Online advertising is the only advertising area that I would feel comfortable working inI am interested to know if there is a certain area of the advertising (I'm in print sales at this moment) where the money is gernally higher, or that is going to be or is in huge demand, what kind of things are going to be getting more and more popular as time goes on, like the increase in online and death of print etc.

Add that to the fact that in 10 years most the world will be using iPad/Phone style devices instead of newspapers and magazines.

If I was going to work in advertising I would want to be the guy designing and coding the online ad's. Technology can't replace creativity but will one day replace most sales guy's.
Not sure about that!In the future, you might need a plucky sales person to encourage a customer to use an ad creation service with pre-designed professional templates that a customer can select from and update his content as and when he wants. Doesn't Google adwords offer this kind of thing? Just down to a marketing person with SEO experience to decide on the best wording for a given campaign.

Write the underlying rulesets, thats the money.

Well there is the oppurtunity to move to an online biased role, so that isn't out of the question. As much as we're told that print is still king, I agree over time that it will die, because it costs too much, the ROI is often much much lower than a similar online ad etc.
I apreciate what you say about creative people replacing sales people, I don't think this is true. There will always be a place for people that sell. But I was interested to know if there was a particular avenue to look at.
Thanks for all opinions thus far.

I presume you mean as an account handler? In which case you'll need a whole raft of skills in addition to the ability to sell.
It is a very, very difficult job to do well, and extremely hard work. Pay is good at the senior levels, but you'll be working 24/7 for ten years to get there.
VOE.

At current I suppose I handle accounts, just made the jump to the gadget/technology field actually, so looking forward to that.
Where I am there is so much opportunity for learning, not so much for earning I feel. When you say senior levels what kind of titles are we talking to I can compare? And do you mean online or print? Or even agency? Thank you for your help.

Remember that print is being replaced not only with online adverts. I'm seeing an increasing number of billboards being replaced with screens and advertising on the tube is getting more digital by the day too. These screens have mainly just been rotating print adverts but I've started to see some more creative usage of the medium.
Certainly digital is becoming king, I'm a minor partner in a design agency. At a rough guess, I'd say the work split has gone from around 80/20 print/digital to 20/80 print/digital (ignoring general multi purpose branding of course)

Thanks for your advice, I have moved to a magazine within the existing company that has a huge online side of things and although I will be in print for a while, its a big step as the previous title had little online presence or path out of print.Certainly digital is becoming king, I'm a minor partner in a design agency. My ideal plan would be to learn the ropes (which I have done by starting at the very bottom) of print, and then online and then try and work for myself in the industry some time in the future, so all the advice is useful, and I am glad I have the opputunity to learn each aspect of the industry.
There is still good money to be made. TV advertising has taken a hit for the terrestrial broadcasters over the last 18 months as the recession bits - Sky seems immune to the effects though (but even they have been laying off production staff I hear). However there will be a deman for tv advertsing - spot advertising, sponsorship, marketing and the whole "360" approach for the forseeable.
As has been said before, online is the one area thats bucking the trend at the moment, but its not a cash cow just yet. If you are a salesman then there will always be jobs and if you are good, can network and with a little luck you can still make lots of money - in fact its one of the few jobs that you can work your way up from the bottom relatively quickly and without many qualifications.
